It's interesting, too, given how much media these days includes jumping universes: His Dark Materials, OA, Strange Days, etc. all have this as a theme but the Primes are often either boring or horrors instead of being a realistic set of changes based on differences outside of a similar history.
I use the framework as occassional hooks in planned or encounter tables, and as general background. Note, in the campaign world I've applied this to, the world has been largely populated by off-worlders from other Primes so it makes sense to have some level of detail and a little cultural interaction in a future fantasy setting.
Last thought, and this is definitely personal preference, but I don't think universe/Prime hopping and time travel are compatible for narrative purposes. It easily devolves into some kind of primordial soup.
