Honestly this is an understatement to say the least but the concept of an alignment for gameplay mechanics isn't a bad concept in itself. I'd argue it's a great one, it's just never been given depth or when it has been, it's been far too autistic and restrictive and immersion breaking.

Alignment is great for "you're veering into what can only be described as an evil character" and "Congratulations on exemplifying what it is to be GOOD." and it is a great mechanic for paladin classes to restrict what does and doesn't get atomised by the power of god.
Yet any sort of attempt to make a system for law vs chaos is utter retardation and I can't even respect the attempt at such a thing. It's just copying Dnd for no purpose.

Good/Evil alignment in combination with faction reputation is the gold standard.
It allows for far more in depth exploration of your actions and how the world responds to it.
You could aid a hated faction yet still hold true to your morals because ultimately you think in spite of the flaws of that faction, that they're best for society in the long run.
You can express complex rationalities like this as well as how people perceive them and you.

Instead what we almost always get is "you can't do that, it's not within your alignment, I'm gonna have to shift your alignment on the spot if you insist upon this course. You're ruining everyone’s emersion. I don't care how your rationalise it!!!!"

The closest attempt I've seen is a simple "corruption" system in which your character was meant to be good and taking moral shortcuts would lead to you gaining corruption. When you gain max corruption, your character is retired.
That is hardly a system that would fit in well everywhere it worked there.
