Unironically make bookmarks in the instruction and preferably write down important stuff. The instruction for this game is a shitshow, regardless of edition, and it's always needle in a haystack situation to find the right rule or information. On top of that, the instruction is simply bad per se, as it explains the game poorly.

If anything, I'd suggest playing baseline Eldritch Horror - much better game in the long run. And the only "expansion" you need for it is reading online how Focus and Resource tokens work and add those to your game without buying expansions with them.

Oh, right, nearly forgot:
This is the rare case where playing via Tabletop Simulator is actually superior to playing it using actual, physical game. The reasons are two-fold: at least some things are automated (easing on the confusion) and you don't have to then spend an hour putting the game back into the box. And it doesn't even mean you have to play online, crowding a single PC in a group of 4-6 people is still better than the fucking mess it is to play it physically
