The agricultural Midwest (and Texas) is not a shithole, but it is unappealing to a traveler because it has very little public life. People only go out for work, shopping and goyslop drive-thrus. Every Midwest town has a neat Main Street, but nothing ever happens on it besides insurance sales and a few old ladies going antique shopping. Everyone who settled the American heartland did so out of an insatiable craving to own land, not to be one of the urban bourgeoisie sharing spaces with strangers all day. You'll see no end of beautiful estates all across the region, but as a traveler, all you can do is view them in passing. The Northwoods is the most attractive region for travelers, as it has plenty of public lands where one can roam at liberty. No spectacular Instagram scenery, but lovely natural beauty everywhere you look.
