Most people in the US own cars so it's kinda irrelevant unlike in other countries where car ownership is lower.

I use Amtrak a lot cause I like traveling by rail but admit it has it's flaws. Like many have already said, it's not reliable. Amtrak travels on rails not owned by them so they have to give the right-of-way to freight cars. Depending on him many of these trains you run into in between destinations, it can delay you a lot. If you need to get somewhere at a ertain time, than Amtrak is not an option.

On the flip side, traveling by rail is really relaxing. I enjoy taking an overnight trip and enjoying the scenery. A lot of lines run through smaller towns that you can't access by a major highway.
