They lost my SSN card and birth certificate or something several moves ago at the time, and while we knew the info on them, it was still pretty damn difficult to obtain them. It didn't help they homeschooled me too, almost invisible to the government.
The DMV made it hell though, it took a while to get enough "sufficient documents" outside of my birth certificate and SSN to get an ID. (I was 20 years old when this happened, and I felt hopeless, couldn't get a job, have a bank account, or do anything really)
Now I make paper copies and keep records of most things, especially stuff like election mail, jury summons, certain statements, old IDs, my W-2s, you name it. Bureaucracy is a son of a bitch. (and so are neglectful parents)
