I second this. London't polycentricity is an underrated quality, and it's interesting that the 'best' (subjective) districts are not necessarily the wealthiest ones. That said, the poorest and most ethnic districts are usually to be avoided.

If you are a traveller who favours relaxation, or who just briefly wants to immerse himself in an authentic local culture, then no city of more than about 500,000 people is going to scratch the itch. They're too diverse (I mean economically, but ethnically too) and fast-paced. The ideal traveller for London or Paris is someone who is interested in how some of the world's richest and most historically important cities function, for good and ill. You get a lot more history than in the equivalent metropolises of the orient, and a bit more calm than you would get in NYC which is on another level of bustle.
