Sydney and Melbourne then get back on the plane.

Summer: Land in Perth rent a car and go down to the South West, Busselton-Yallingup-Margaret River and down to Esperance
Autumn: Head to Queensland and go from Gold Coast to Surfers Paradise, then on the Great Barrier Reef. Brisbane is an interesting city too but don't expect an exciting nightlife compared to America's big cities.
Then there's the Kimberly, Cape York and Red Center, but unless you're specifically awestruck by the scenery I wouldn't recommend it.

I wouldn't recommend Australia unless you have a reason to want to visit. Melbourne has some great Federation and Art Deco architecture, New South Wales has a lot of world class golf courses, Hobart has MONA and a lot of hiking.
