People criticized what was at the time seen as an "overuse" of CG. The original trilogy is full of grimy sets that look real and lived-in whereas a lot of prequel environments look too clean and smooth, too "digital". Part of that is because the original trilogy took place in bunkers and farms and derelict, out-of-the-way places while the prequels are more in opulent cities and offices. Of course not every prequel scene is in a place like that, and a lot of prequel stuff WAS shot on real sets, but plenty of it wasn't, and the stuff that wasn't stuck in people's heads.

It's pretty funny because compared to how movies are made nowadays (with all the special effects done years in advance of the filming even starting), George Lucas sitting and looking at greenscreens with his coffee saying and doing weird shit DOES look downright soulful. Even Stoklasa has said that.
