It really wasn't. It was basically anti-Stalin (because Orwell was butthurt the during the Spanish Civil War that the Stalin-backed PCE tried to whip the disorganized anarchist factions and POUM into something that could actively resist the fascist), but Old Major and Snowball, the other two comminst pigs in the story, are never portrayed as being in the wrong. Meanwhile the human farmers are stand ins for various monarchist/fascist/capitalist/counterrevolutionary forces and are clearly villains, in fact Napoleon, the Stalin stand in, is said to be indistinguishable from the the human farmers at the end of the story.

btw they already remade Animal Farm as a live action movie in the 90's or something and in that film they changed the ending so that the animals let the "good" human farmer come back to be in charge and they all live happily ever after. Now THAT'S subversion.
