Why do so many Christians just mindlessly repeat the story when this point gets brought up without understanding any of the underlying points? Jesus' sacrifice is not a sacrifice, unless you count giving away your weekend a proper price for all of humanity's sins. The guy becomes (assuming he ever stopped being) god again and rules supreme for all eternity. No actual sacrifice was made, in fact the people betraying and crucifying Jesus made a much greater sacrifice in fulfilling his master plan, after which they assumedly were thrown into hell for all eternity for the crime of doing what Jesus wanted them to do. Secondly, the core idea behind substitutionary atonement is retarded and there's a very good reason even Christians don't normally accept it as just. If a person rapes and murders someone, we don't allow the murderer to designate an innocent sacrificial lamb (animal or human) who dies in their stead. It's a miscarriage of justice, a loophole for criminals to avoid personal accountability.

Third, the story removes god's omnipotence: god is able to do everything... except forgive without a blood sacrifice. God doesn't want to send you to hell... he is just unable to prevent himself from creating hell and torturing you if engage in wrongthink. Fourth, it's inconsistent: in some cases Jesus just forgives people in the stories, no blood sacrifice necessary. Again, inconsistent power level.
