The 3DS was released before the Wii U. It overlaps with the Wii U, yes, but it was released when Nintendo were enjoying success they hadn't enjoyed since the 90s.

Eternal Darkness was what I was thinking of. The 64 also had things like Conker's Bad Fur Day and Gamecube had timed exclusivity on Resident Evil 4.

Nintendo struggled with third-party support in general in the period between the SNES and the Wii. Only after the Wii and DS's success did most third-parties start taking Nintendo seriously again, and particularly since Playstation started fumbling after their absolute dominance with PSX and PS2. We're talking hypotheticals now, but I don't think those games would have faced any issues if they released on, say, the Gamecube.
