I don't think he had a choice given that Nintendo starting to be carried by Rare which is why they let them choose the character from a catalogue in the first place. The only thin Miyamoto recommended that stuck was simply leaving his fucking tie. Rare made DK into what you know today, otherwise he would have simply been the donkey kong gorilla from an arcade game.

Microsoft lead their shit reins after that, all of their games were terrible because they were duke nukemed into developer hell due to microsoft picking their brains. Just about every Rare game up until that debaucle and the buyout was great. They would have made more games than Nintendo for N64 were they not asked to make this monstrosity. Any ill will or bad blood these DK fans talk about is a sprinkle of water to this piss bucket he dumped on them.
