knowing the rules is knowing when to break them
and no one is saying 'let them do whatever they want', its that a GM can adjust the game or tell you that what you're doing is wrong because he knows the rules of the game and whats actually going into an adventure and what a character should look like
with crpgs you either make a proper character or dont and there's nothing to even remotely suggest if you're doing something wrong or bad without looking it up ahead of time
