There are some great pieces of art made with digital, so it's not the tools fault as much as a failing in the systems of education we used to have to build good artists.

For much of the world and in the past, art school was a legitimate thing. Businesses need signage, advertisements, books need covers, there are tons of things in society that require art. But the rise of digital art destroyed many of those jobs. Rather than handmade things crafted by professionals, now we have tools that can churn out "good enough" garbage for the masses at record pace...

So art schools pivoted to survive and just became babysitting places for rich kids who want to feel special. They focus more on their student's egos and making sure tuition is paid rather than true art skills. They aren't even doing live drawing anymore in many of America's art schools.

So that gives us a generation of artists who weren't trained properly and even if they work their asses off, it's always harder to re-invent the wheel when you can't pass down mastery and knowledge to the next generation... and that's exactly what's happened. All of the human knowledge on pixel art got thrown out when we went to low poly, then all of the human knowledge on photoshop diffuse textures from 2001 got thrown out when we went to sculpted PBR material workflows using substance designer for textures... There are troves of books written on making game characters from 2002 that only exist on internet archive. So all this mastery and knowledge keeps getting lost and the end result is a very "color by numbers" feel to everything we see in games that is machined down to the exact same art style and pipeline and tools for every game made.

Go look at Artstation and all you'll see is a sea of hyperdetailed space marines and fantasy elves that all look the fucking same.
