you're talking about stuff like starfield, another slop game that, in contrast, sold decently well because of the mostly positive reputation of bethesda and lack of controversy (also new IP)
normies ate starfield up, not this game
big franchises have a lot more wiggle room to be slop when they're multiplayer (call of duty)
single player games need to maintain a pretty decent reputation or they're vulnerable to failure
