It was sold as a Steam competitor with the promise that they would take a smaller cut than other store fronts and would also provide games at a cheaper price. Tim Sweeney has been on a never ending tirade shitting on Steam. Makes it more interesting that Tim specifically never shit on Xbox/Playstation/Nintendo due to needing Fortnite on those systems, despite the fact the cut they take is industry standard. I have no idea if the first part was ever true, but the second certainly wasn't. Then there's the big reason why it's universally hated, the exclusives. Epic purchased exclusivity and even funded games to have them on it's store for a certain amount of time. Games like Hades and Kingdom Hearts took ages to finally leave the Epic Store. Literally no one even knew Hades existed until it finally left and that brings up the next point. Even developers are aware just how bad Epic can be. Unless Epic funds the entire game (and then some), there's literally no point in selling out to them because the game will not sell for shit on that store, nor will it ever be in the public eye like it would be on Steam. There's no reason for console-like exclusivity on the open PC market. Epic removes the choice from the consumer and forces them to buy directly from them. This is in stark contrast to Steam, where you can buy a steam key from whatever 3rd party site you want. Steam doesn't get a cut if I were to buy from GreenManGaming, Fanatical, or any other site.
