It's an amalgamation of things.

>Rivals character designs are filled to the brim with cheesy shit that can be very obnoxious to deal with at low/mid level play
>Stages are huge, encouraging passive play and making games drag on for agonizing minutes
>A lot of the cast has 3.2 PM tier recoveries
>Input execution is extremely lenient so everyone can shit out combos and juggle the fuck out of you
>Shields are still strong without shield poking, and while you have shield break set ups, you're not guaranteed anything from a shield break set up since opponents don't get stunned
>Stage control gimmicks are not fun no matter how much Rivals tries to force this. It's not cool that Clairen has a move that just cancels projectiles or that Olympia can threaten to cover half the stage with her crystal
>Movement feels a bit too free outside of baby dashing
>Servers are utter garbage, and Dan is retarded for choosing servers over P2P

Also the game has less content than Smash 64 of all games. There is nothing to this game but ranked. Unranked singles might get you so games, but if you just want to relax and play FFAs or doubles you're shit out of luck because they have nobody playing. You have to play ranked and deal with all the baggage that comes with playing ranked.
