>What's the best 2D Sonic game?
Sonic 3 & Knuckles as a whole experience for me, even though I hate Sandopolis. Its simply a very complete experience with solid replayability and lots of routes. Sonic Mania is a runner-up but really drops the ball late game and has some pretty drawn-out bosses.

It's probably not going anywhere any time soon, in multiple meanings. Superstars spun its wheels bad and they have little incentive to follow it up, but on the flip side 2D Sonic is a major part of the identity that even Shadow Gens still has 2.5D sections galore as an inherent trait of Boost gameplay, so they can't just axe it either. 2D is inherent to the franchise, we just dunno when they'll go back to Genesis style again.

I mean, we already have the mobile ports/decomps, Origins, 3 AIR, all of them showing that with widescreen gameplay the classic Sonic gameplay is a lot less blindsiding thanks to the extra screen real estate for reaction. And frankly, Sonic 1 plays differently enough from the others that people should go into that with very different expectations anyway, even for the ports that come with the Spin Dash. You want frustrating? Go play Advance 3. That level design will make everything the Genesis games throws at you look downright pleasant.

Best I could ever say is to undo a couple of the balance fuckles that tormented the endgames, like no rings on Death Egg for 2 and the final boss on 3&K if you die at it, but purists would cry foul.
