It's a deckbuilding roguelike, Poker and cards in general is just a theme to build the game around. Your objective is to play poker hands that earn enough score to beat the required score and move on to the next round.
Just fishing for poker hands will only get you through the first "Ante" (level), you'll need to actually engage with the game mechanics (Jokers, upgrading your hands, upgrading your cards, adding/changing/removing cards, etc.) to earn enough score to progress past that. The game has a decent tutorial that takes you through the basics.
