who says programmers who work in licensed engines couldn't write an engine? the fact is only that they haven't done it, just like Notch hadn't written an engine right up until the day when he finally did write one. the fact that I would rather not write a whole ass game engine when so many already exist does not imply in any way that I couldn't do it if I had a good reason to.

finally let's remember that Notch has made one video game. after releasing his magnum opus he let other people manage it and basically retired. now he baits "Minecraft 2" every other year but never actually makes anything. I'm not saying the insistence on starting every game project by writing a whole engine is the primary cause for his lack of productivity and he would be releasing games yearly otherwise. but it's not far fetched to assume it's an additional hurdle and he could have been more productive if he just used a fucking engine, at least for prototyping. what kind of game designer retires after one game? grats on being a hardcore Java programmer though kek
