I don't see Greninja being Water/Dark stopping Feraligatr from being Water/Dark. They've repeated starter type combos across gens before, they doubled-up on starter secondary types in PLA, and they probably have the mindset that someone would only pick Totodile OR Froakie.
Now don't get me wrong, I think Water/Dark would be pretty lame for those same reasons, and I actively hope it ISN'T Water/Dark, but I just don't think the reasoning would stop them.

In Gen 4, Empoleon was weak to both Torterra and Infernape. So they've somewhat disturbed the triangle before.
And in SV, Quaquaval's Fighting is strong against Meowscarada's Dark, and Meowscarada's Dark is strong against Skeledirge's Ghost. Skeledirge doesn't quite complete it, but Ghost is immune to Fighting, and Skeledirge is the most defensive of the trio.
They could make Feraligatr part Poison, Meganium part Fairy, then Emboar part Ground. Ground over Poison, Poison over Fairy, and Fire/Ground becomes neutral to Grass.

All that said, I personally think this is the most likely scenario. Though if they do go the sewer-gator route, I still think Water/Poison could work. Just give Meganium an ability that makes it immune to Poison, similar to Earth Eater.
