The difficulty is extremely front-loaded.
My first few days of reading were so mind-crushingly hard, after my hour of studying I felt like some bastard had taken an ice pick to my skull. Not metaphorically, as in, "it was unpleasant", no, real, visceral fucking pain.
It was so awful I bitched out of studying a lot of days in my first month. Eventually I steeled myself and forced myself to read, no matter how much I hated it.
If you can do that, get through those first, terrible, terrible fucking weeks, you're basically 90% done already.
The headaches lessened considerably in the second month, although they still sucked.
In month three, I was reading a visual novel and noticed to my complete surprise that I didn't have a headache somehow. I was reading, and it was hard, but it didn't hurt.
The headaches never came back. I learned more words, and reading became easier and easier.
After a year, reading Japanese became something I did to relax. It was bizarre. Twelve months ago, reading was the most difficult challenge in my life. Now I looked forward to it.
It was a treat. I could do anything in Japanese I wanted, any game, any VN, any anime, anything at all. Anime girls told me they loved me and I heard them say it in their own voices. I published a translation, and checked 4chan the next day and people were talking about my own translation, that I made. It was crazy; it felt like I had superpowers.
All that in the first year. I was wishing I started earlier.

I do not want to understate how hard it is to START learning Japanese.
"Study for an hour a day, every day" is a very easy thing to type, but it is a very difficult thing to actually do.
Those first few weeks break people. Most give up.
But if you really want it, you can do it.
If there's some anime girl or J-pop idol out there who you love so much you'd take an ice pick to the head to hear her tell you she loves you, well, here's your chance.
For me, it was worth it.
