Board: /vr/
"/vr/ - Retro Games" is 4chan's imageboard for discussing retro console video games and classic arcade games.
This board is for the discussion of classic, or "retro" games, including consoles, computer games, arcade games (including pinball) and any other forms of video games. Retro gaming means platforms launched in 2001 and earlier, and official game titles for those platforms released no later than December 2007 (homebrew console games made after this date will be permitted). The Microsoft Xbox, Nintendo GameCube, Nintendo Game Boy Advance, and Sony PlayStation 2 will now be considered "retro".

so I've been playing SFIII scenario 2:
Zero leaving after 2 fights only to come back seriously underleveled, even though Birdman are the hardest ones to level up to begin with.
>Donhort
Elbesem villagers, I learnt my lesson from the first game and saved them all... only to fight out I was supposed to NOT save the thief and missed out on a reward. Real fuck you move.
Elbesem temple, the fucking electricity discharge machinery... which you have to wait out their animation every turn. Oh and you wanna know the best part? I start with my whole 12 team + Donhort tagging along, then save Robby in the treasury. So that was 14 men for that fight. I decide to Egresss so that I wouldn't have to re-do the treasury, and because of the electricity discharge I had already used up quite a bit of healing, only to find out that of course now it's only 13 (12+Donhort), not only that but that shit is bugged as no matter what I would do Julian wouldn't join, if I tried to bring him alone I'd just get 11+Donhort instead of 12.
Followed by also having to wait out on every Rainblood doing their own thing in the next fight...
Followed by that fucking canon fight
Holy shit the game took a nosedive starting from the mid game. I just want some NORMAL fights. Now I'm dreading what comes next; and because of this shit there isn't any "normal" situation where I can even grind some of my under leveled guys like Zero. I bought the bullet and Promoted him at lvl 12 but of course he's still shit, just a bit less shit. >NPCs constantly exposition dumping
>boring minigames
>boring fetch quest filler
>constant backtracking
>upgrades that gate progression
who the fuck asked for any of this shit? This fucking sucks https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r3fPXfX2jDE
What the fuck am I listening to? How did we go from the sublime soundtracks of the first two games to this? It's insane how close this is to an N64 game despite it being SNES. Smash BRAWL contained the entirety of Ocarina of Time amongst other games inside it. Day of the Tentacle had a PC in game that let you play entirety of Maniac Mansion (which I unironically did as a kid). Any other examples of this? Game(s) within a game Up until last week I've never heard of romhacks (I'm kind of a retard ik)
Currently playing pokemon crystal clear and it's thoroughly enjoyable but lacking story
Probably going to play pokemon clover and the super mario /v/orld saga afterwards
Shill me your best romhacks lads what the best version of this that isn't the arcade version with its bullshit difficulty and unfairness that is designed just to steal your money.
I can see that its ported to Amiga, Amstrad CPC, Atari ST, Commodore 64, Commodore 16, Game Boy Color, IBM PC compatibles, NEC PC-8801, Nintendo Entertainment System, and ZX Spectrum.
which one is best that has improved the design over the arcade original? no matter how old this game gets it never stops feeling to me like it's powered by black magic Been playing through these games, I'm now playing Future Perfect and it's dogshit. 1 and 2 were decent but they aren't really proper campaigns with how random and disjointed the levels are, then 1's levels are barebones and half of 2's are terribly unfun with annoying enemies/objectives (Neotokyo, Atom Smasher, Robot Factory with those homing rockets, Aztec, fucking hell).
I guess it was one of those "you had to be there" situations where it was fun with friends I refuse to believe people 100%ed this back in the day without a guide Got Mine edition

Were they wrong about the soundtrack? Lightfoot Village... shit... I'm still in Lightfoot Village... What's your favorite Duke game?
Mine is "American Badass" for the PS2 >console simulations of pachinko machines
>pachinko controllers for those games
What's the point?
>pic somewhat related, it's in a pachinko parlor. >four locked doors back to back
How is this everyone's favorite dungeon, it's indicative of how basic dungeon design is in this game.

US West: https://clovr.xyz/
CA/US Midwest: https://macgu.fun/ Out of the entire King's Quest series nobody seems to remember this one and probably for a good reason. The gall of PCEWORKS as a company is astounding. They literally do not own the rights to any of these games but they're selling reproductions of them. Since it's a CD based format, it's cheap to reproduce them. Genius really. What does /vr/ think of the Shadow Tower games? Were Toejam and Earl both black coded or just Toejam? When you emulate N64 games... do you use the real deal? I KNOW WHAT YOU'RE TRYING TO DO...

Talk about everything EverQuest ITT Weell it finally happened, my 9001 slim ps2 stopped reading discs.
What's the best solution nowadays? Some pendrive stuff? >Yeah, dude, let's make an air racing satire game that basically mocks every stereotype out there. I'm sure no one will notice
How did they do it? New Mortal Kombat Legacy Kollection for modern consoles and PC:
https://youtu.be/K97cL-4sDJg
Includes MK1, 2, 3, Ultimate3, 4 (arcade and console versions of those except for 4 which is Arcade only) and handheld versions of those games plus MK Advance, Deadly Alliance and Tournament Edition for GBA, more stuff announced soon.
Game also will have online netplay with rollback netcode.
Sadly its made by Digital Eclipse who made Street Fighter 30th Anniversary Collection and Samurai Shodown NeoGeo Collection, which were below average compendiums with tons of issues. >gb

If you judged these libraries individualy, which one be the best one? So they're releasing a new lightgun that works with modern TVs with this new plug in and play system, Gaime. The premium version comes with Time Crisis, Point Blank, Steel Gunner 1 and 2 and a pedal.
Official website (scroll down for English)
https://www.tasseidenki.co.jp/gaime
What does /vr/ think? I'd be interested in this but I'd want more games released like House of the Dead or Ninja Assault.
Feel free to talk about the genre and mention any good lightgun games.
Last thread was comfy but I only lurked in it, so I'll make one more. Don't expect this to become a general.
What's your experience with CeX? I don't know what it's like in the UK, but in Australia it's a mixed bag. Software is surprisingly cheap and you can get some pretty desirable games in the $20-50 price range. However, you can just as easily end up with a heavily scratched up disc.
As for hardware, only buy from CeX as a last resort: their controllers are mushy, drifty, brittle, and several buttons may not work. They don't properly test their stuff and their return policy is absolute garbage too because they only refund you with store credit (which is illegal here, lol). Consoles are also ridiculously expensive at CeX; do not buy.
Their inventory infrastructure is kinda bad too since I made a pickup order online, but once I got to the actual store they didn't have the component cables I wanted. I guess God is telling me that composite is the one true path, and I'm inclined to agree.
To be honest, I made this thread solely to vocalise how much I want to bang the goth chick working at my local CeX. Can a dashing young zoomer lad like me woo this washed up millennial and give her an escape from the harrowing realisation she peaked in 2008? why didn't he just stomp shao khan, onaga, etc? >*casually deletes two hours worth of progress* So, how could the 32x have succeeded?
I always hear the question asked about Dreamcast and Saturn but never ol' Mushroomhead
This piece of shit is refusing to save my Spyro 2 game. I've started the game and saved three times now and every single time it's lost when I reboot.
I've saved multiple times, entered the OSD, the "Saving..." text appeared and then it said saved like it should, and then I even waited about a minute before shutting off. And every single fucking time, it's gone, no block on the memory card and the game acts like it's a fresh game. I've saved multiple times, entered OSD multiple times, I have no clue how it's not saved.
All the other games I've played on it have saved totally fine (I did lose one session with Crash 2, but I think that was just my own error, not waiting long enough or something).
What the fuck is going on? Am I missing something? Is this a known issue?
The only thing I can think is I went into memory card screen of PS1 OS to delete files and both Memcard 1 and 2 are the same mirrored card, which makes no sense because Memcard 1 and 2 on MiSTer are supposed to have their own unique saves. Then to delete it, I had to delete it on both sides, which worked, but maybe it corrupted something?
This is pissing me off though, how does MiSTer fuck up something emus have done fine for decades? anybody have the 4k? I love the idea but I don't want to spend 500 autismo hours trying to dial it in. how is the setup process? What can /vr/ tell me about Trojan? man did Rare have to shit out some awful shovelware to pay the bills. also spoiler, Youtube is kill. you just get a bunch of gray outlines of videos. Examples of DokiDokification beside SMB2? >it's not even a competitive fighter!!!
>it's western!!!!!!!
Yeah, we know dweebs. This is about nostalgia. Anyway what monster did you like best if you were an American kid in the 90s playing this?
For me, it was Vertigo. Ploksisters... is this true? Does nobody truly want to play our game? This level sucks. Why did they make it Mission 2 instead of putting it at the end where damage sponge enemies belong? not gonna happen but a proper remake of this game would be cool as fuck
the best Zelda game in terms of originality, aesthetics, lore, OST. etc.
the FF7 of Zelda games (if you think it's OOT you have never played this game) ITT: Ball games.
Good or bad, please post all the ball games you can think of. Ideally you roll around as a ball (but not necessarily) and also there has to be game physics.

Here's a museum of every known Super Gameboy boarder.
Do any of these catch your eye at all? If so, post 'em. Is that a reasonable price? Did the GameCube deserve the criticisms it got back in 2005?
>Luigi's Mansion was considered a joke of a launch title
>Sunshine wasn't as good as SM64
>Wind Waker looked like a cartoon
>Metroid Prime wasn't "as good as" Halo
>Paper Mario The Thousand Year Door for having turn based combat
>1.4GB discs It just works better as an arcade game, without save files. Stakes are higher and fun is infinite.
If you never beat Sonic & Knuckles stand alone on real hardware, you didn't beat the game. Ive come to the conclusion that this is the only decent one. And it's just okay, not good. Though I'm eternally annoyed that Kimberly and Trini don't have an unique ranger model.
The SNES Movie game is really annoying, jumping between foreground and background is tedious as is contact damage against every enemy, and the Mega Drive games are even worse, a shitty fighting game and the beat em up with worst enemy variety ever made. >you see Sonic, it would be too easy to let your adventure end here. Instead I will force you to battle an Antlion stuck in a pit and jump over some balls Why did people turn on Quake 2's campaign? Obviously it was overshadowed by the multiplayer but the single player reviewed well and was generally quite liked at the time, though in the last 10-15 years people seem to have been shitting on it relentlessly. Was your first system the most nostalgic for you? it's weird because even though the Mega Drive and the Game Boy were my first systems, and I loved them a ton, I have way more nostalgia for my third system (PS1) for some reason. I remember it a lot more fondly and I'm beginning to ask myself if it was because of the games, or because of external circumstances. >What's a good price for X in my city?
Ask and you shall find out! Why would Jim allow Peter Puppy to be present for this level? HE KNOWS WHAT WILL HAPPEN It's weird this look hasn't been promoted to popular r e t r o a e s t h e t i c as widely and as lowpoly+pixel art textures. It looks sleek, distinctive and it's resolution-independent. Ever think of that? Cornering the market on some still easily available thing from Japan? The whole place is being strip mined of retro-stuff and if you don't get in on it now you'll be complaining later. Just like you are today about the prices of retro stuff.
I have over a dozen copies of this now. Why isn't this TMNT game often discussed here? Is it because it's mediocre, or just bad? It's just not as good as it's predecessors. Map is too flat and boring, they took the word "field" too literally. They work better as moody dungeon explorers. Gonna skip this and go to shadow tower. How useful is Vhailor as a partner? And who should be replaced then? No matter how many times I try this game I just can't stand it. You fall faster than any other platforming character in history and the levels are just a bunch of floating nonsense and annoying gimmicks. It looks great and has great music, but the gameplay is just downright obnoxious. It's bland as hell.
The world is huge, but there is almost nothing to find in it except some cave with an ice rod.
It's not a bad game, it's just not the masterpiece people pretend it is. Anon, what are you doing playing your sister's games? Go get out Tecmo Bowl or Ninja Gaiden before I punch your jaw in. what's the best font hack for FF6 Advance? i'm going to be playing it on a PS Vita slim so screen size isnt much of an issue.

Retro games where this occurs? Best Pink Panther retro ludos? What are your favorite RPGs (CRPGs, JRPGs, whatever) that utilize a science fiction plot/aesthetic/etc.? Kind of burnt out on fantasy and want something with a sci-fi
Pic randomly chosen Why did people dislike Windows so much for gaming?
PC gamers should praise Microsoft and DirectX as the face of PC gaming (popularized affordable PCs and created it's best and nearly sole operating system for gaming) and not Valve (made a fucking webshop) Recommended cr2025 battery holder for Game Boy games?
I'm mainly looking for 2025 because I've heard 1616 hold way less power and games like Pokemon Silver draw a lot of power. Which property had better games in the 16 bit era, Spider-Man or X-Men?
i may be paranoid but...
there's a server fulfilled with ai-powered players
so you're joining this server. it downloads almost nothing (except for some songs which are typical for russian servers). in technical aspects this server is really good (dynamic change of day/night and weather).
we (me with my friends who i asked to play css for some 2011 vibes) were playing on this server and at some point things become quite creepy.
two or three players almost at the same time were telling my friend something and all of them typed his nickname with SAME mistakes.
after this we noticed the VC and people there who were talking absolute word salad
after this we made out that this server is ai-powered. i started asking random players as an answer to their messages something. no response
at some point i asked about bots and players started to get crazy. (everything about this is on the pic)
that's it. i don't know if those are real players who were trolling us (with answers in 3-5 minutes after message and same mistakes in nickname from everyone. yeah sure) They went all out with this one tech wise. High quality pre-rendered graphics with faux 3D perspective for background elements; also included a DOOM-like first person stage that was smooth as hell and 3D racing stage. Easily the most technologically advanced games of the 16-bit era. Someone should translate all Summon Night games that never made it out of Japan. Time for a /vroom/ thread. Post racing games only you've played and what your first car was (mine was a Hilux '94 - I miss the old girl) For me the switch from NES to SNES was the biggest hardware jump of a console. I love the NES but it's very limited and suddenly you had a NES that could do all those things, with all those colours, that music, all that power. It really felt like a SUPER NES and compared to the NES it was amazing but still felt like what we knew just better. You can't compare it to the N64 because it didn't feel like anything before. What are your memories with MK4? This game came out when I first tried pot with my friend, I'll never forget staying up all night stoned drinking Surge and laughing hysterically at the voice overs and lobbing skinless heads at each other etc, fond memories for possibly the least fondly remembered game in the classic series what's your go-to jungle? also welcome: jungle vibes, -core, -tunes etc. Why did this game never get released outside Japan? Did '90s Capcom have the best character designs across the board the medium has ever seen? Yeah there's some duds in there (eg Maki being a bad Mai Shiranui ripoff and some of the SF3 characters are a bit out there) but 95% of them are fantastic regardless of the genre they were in. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OwwzEfgCPhQ
This dude used some ancient 64DD 3D modelling software (on real hardware) to model a level and then put it in Super Mario 64.
How are N64 modders this insane? It feels like they never run out of dumb (and cool) shit to try. This was literally the coolest shit ever back then. Also, Rogue made me feel things. just what drugs were they on when they came up with this title? Why does this thing almost feel a generarion behind the nes despite being developed around the same time? It's more like a 5200 pro What are some technically impressive retro games? I know I'm literally retarded for letting this children's puzzle game filter me, especially since this is Easy Picross mode. But can someone please walk me through this? I understand the basic rules of the game, but this was all I'm able to deduce-- it feels like I'm forced to make a complete guess here. There's gotta be some logic I just can't see. How do you feel about MOH Underground compared to the original game? >Remixed ost that are better than the original

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fGG_Hk1a78k my mom picked this up for me because MIB was popular at the time. I remember it being so bad and I didn't want to tell my mom to return it so I just powered through it in like a weekend People talk a lot of shit about oi me Speccy and the Amigger, but were games for IBM PC-compatibles really much better during those computers' heydays? The original thread (>>11735928) has reached the bump limit it seems. Rules of the thread are simple:
>You can only talk about games and systems made before the US release of the NES (1985). Everything before it from the CRT Amusement Device to stuff like Marble Madness is cool here. Later and homebrew ports for Pre-NES games are allowed (e.g. Jr. Pac-Man was released in arcades in 1983 but the 2600 port came out in 1986).
>That's it.
Thoughts on Radar Scope? Personally, I think it's just okay. I'd rather play Galaxian over it. Do you use these button names? When was the last time you played a game with soul? Was Sonic Adventure, released in 1998 for the Sega Dreamcast, truly highly impressive for its time? >nearly 30 years since its release
>still the best ''metroidvania'' ever made
How did Iga do it? This entire game is near perfect. Post 'retro' games only you like War and Peace the video game. >big bro gave me that when I joined UNATCO
>9mm. safety, always off.
>told me he was proud of me once. fuckin' prick. Why was it so fucking good?
It makes most other games look shit in comparison. This game is like a glitch in the matrix or something.
It had no right to be this fucking good. Let's have a Thief thread!
What fan missions have you been playing?
Any fan missions you are looking forward too?
What's your favorite moment in any OM/FM?
I would have posted a longer video with sound but yeah. Was Tekken better before juggling became the focus? Natsume's own Ninja Gaiden. I'm thinking it's about time the unrepentant genius of Mega Man X7 got the recognization it deserves. ITT: demakes you prefer over their bigger siblings. Why are every pro/ anti emulation arguments only about consoles every single time? I have never seen any quarrel about using something like DOXBox instead of vintage PC software.
