Board: /vr/
"/vr/ - Retro Games" is 4chan's imageboard for discussing retro console video games and classic arcade games.
This board is for the discussion of classic, or "retro" games, including consoles, computer games, arcade games (including pinball) and any other forms of video games. Retro gaming means platforms launched in 2001 and earlier, and official game titles for those platforms released no later than December 2007 (homebrew console games made after this date will be permitted). The Microsoft Xbox, Nintendo GameCube, Nintendo Game Boy Advance, and Sony PlayStation 2 will now be considered "retro".

>1996 Do CRT filters on emulators look anything like actual CRT monitors? I'm expecting them to be lazy shit with black lines over the screen Now this game is (almost) fully restored, what do you think of it? Both home and commercial.
What have you been working on? ITT: Games that only you have played Surprisingly not awful for a Western-developed licensed game despite it asking you to suspend disbelief a bit and assume the Hulk who in the comics can lift M1 Abrams tanks above his head needs multiple punches to destroy one measly robot. Not bad music either. You guys think the Expansion Pak was overall a good idea? You think they could have done something else instead that could have helped devs with their games? Are we allowed to talk about the Remaster since /vr/ is responsible for its existence? Not enough of /v/ has actually played the game to have a good discussion about it. What drove Takosuke to a life of crime? GTA San Andreas is the biggest game map ever made by a human.
Now games have 10 times bigger budgets but have smaller map and maps made by AI and auto generated.
Count how much San Andreas had
-roads
-intersections
-buildings
-biomes
-stuff to do and visit
GTA V has smaller map than San Andreas.
50% of GTA V map are procedurally generated mountains.
GTA V has only one city.
GTA V has procedurally generated and copy pasted streets, buildings. Everything looks the same except a few things that are made manually like airport, port.
San Andreas map was almost whole made by human, manually. This is why everything is so unique.
In GTA V wherever you go in the city, all roads and intersections are the same.
>Daggerfall and other games are bigger
No, they either have big empty land with nothing, or they have the same stuff procedurally copied everywhere.
You will never get a map bigger than GTA San Andreas. Video games are over. AI or indians are not capable of doing such map. I'm thinking about buying a Gameboy Advance but i don't know which version to choose, should i go for the normal or the SP version?
I just finished my first playthrough of Final Fantasy USA: Mystic Quest, and I thought it was... really, really mediocre.
I played the Japanese version, which is supposed to be a little harder, and I felt the complaints about its lack of difficulty are overblown.
Healing is very strong in this game, but to make up for that the enemies use nasty status effects really aggressively. Instant Death in particular is common in the endgame and can't be resisted. If you're underleveled and don't play carefully, you can seriously struggle against some of the harder boss fights.
I found the story to be very weak. I really enjoy how you get to see the world heal around you as you save it, but the entire cast is badly underused.
I thought Karen or Fey (Kaeli or Phoebe) were being set up as a romantic interest for the protagonist, and I was disappointed when they weren't, because it really feels like barely anything happens in the whole story.
The characters aren't bad. I liked all of them. They just never get a chance to shine. They barely have a handful of lines each.
I got curious after seeing テッド・ウールゼイ in the credits and read a few interviews, and as it turns out, yes, Ted Woolsey was on the story team for this game. It's his only writing credit and the only retro JRPG I know of with an American writer.
He said he wanted to put more story in the game but Square was adamant about putting it on a 4 Megabit cart to cut costs and there just wasn't room. For comparison, FF4 was released a year earlier on an 8 Megabit cart.
It's a shame. With a little more story, I think Mystic Quest could be much better.
I played it because I wanted a short, easy RPG as a palate cleanser, and that's exactly what I ended up getting. Nothing more, nothing less.
If that's what you're looking for, I can give it a very tepid recommendation.
What do you guys think about Mystic Quest?
Do you prefer axe girl or leotard girl? I liked leotard girl a little more, she's very cute. >just learned that GC games in japan had cute little boxes just big enough for the discs.
What the heck why did we get the big dumb DVD cases. >longer story
>much cooler story
>level transitions which make the game and levels feel actually alive, like they're actually taking time in real time, and have actual progression
>lot of replayability
>power-ups, changing the gameplay
>lot of shit to do
>cool and epic bosses
>michael jackson-like music
>best peak fucking final boss ever a.k.a doomsday zone
>multiple secrets, level mechanics, funny sprites, even win poses, etc plus multiple special and bonus stages
>"uhh sonic 2 is the superior game because... ehh because.. uhhh"
Since 2018, I've been curating and posting a list of secrets, easter eggs, curiosities and fun little things to find in The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. I've posted this list several times in the past, and now the time has come to post it again.
Before we begin, I'd like to mention that the list which follows is a compendium of information derived from a variety of sources, which include old forum posts, strategy guides, videos, and things I've noticed during my own time spent playing the game. Above all, this list is comprised of entries submitted by /vr/ users who have contributed invaluable data over the last 7 years. I've said it every time, and I'll say it again: I learn something new about this game with each passing thread, and I don't think this thread will be any different. As always, if you have anything of merit to share, please feel free to do so and I will add it to the list.
And now, I present to you once more, the many secrets, mysteries and oddities of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time.
Please bear with me while I post the current 118 entries...
>1. In the game's debug menu, a particular crash will cause a screen to appear with some gibberish. Alongside this gibberish, the phrase "I LOVE YOU" is displayed at the top.
>2. Hidden in the game's code is a fully functional Arwing from the StarFox series. This Arwing was used by the developers for testing various combat and camera control features. If you hack it into the game, you can fight it. Not only will it damage Link by trying to shoot him, but you can destroy it with numerous weapons, all of which will cause it to fall to the ground and explode.
>3. Signposts have some impressive physics effects. If you cut a sign and a piece of it all into the water, the piece will create a ripple and float. If you pound the ground near a broken sign with the Megaton Hammer, the pieces will jostle around. If you bomb a sign, pieces of it will fly all over the place. 100 millions for the marketing

This thread is dedicated to the discussion of any classic games made by Blizzard Entertainment; those being every game released from their early days as Silicon & Synapse to the release of Warcraft III: The Frozen Throne (2003). Fans of Warcraft, StarCraft, Diablo and even older series like The Lost Vikings, Rock N' Roll Racing and Blackthorne are all welcome here.

>Try to keep things /vr/ related: Focus should be on 6th Gen Consoles and older. Slight off topic is fine so long as it's related to CRTs, such as later 16:9 models, HD models, etc. Systems with backwards compatibility are also safe territory, as are re-releases on newer hardware. PC CRTs are also welcome and appreciated.
>Produce OC! Bust out your camera and take photos of your CRTs displaying all sorts of games, featuring all sorts of tubes, using all sorts of signals. Getting good shots can be hard, but if you take enough, at least a few will turn out alright.
>Try and give as much information as possible when asking for info on a specific set, or troubleshooting an issue to expedite and help you may receive. As always, Google is your friend and we are your friends with benefits. Do people read this? Older archived threads aren't a bad place to look either; Seriously, there's literally 6 years of backlog at this point.
>Share appreciation for others choice of technology and personal philosophy of gaming. Always remember to show courtesy in your discussion and moderate yourselves first.
Limited discussion of video processing and scaling devices is alright, but remember to keep the focus on CRTs and CRT accessories.

>Use a CRT retard
But you know. Fuck it. Theres fuckin like 10 dollar ones on amazon but im not sure if its even worth 10 bucks. If they are fine thats cool if I need to buy like a 100 dollar one for a proper image ill do that. I just dont really know anything about this topic so im asking here. What are some licensed games that became hallmarks of their respective genres?
Examples being Neon Genesis Evangelion: Iron Maiden in VNs, and 007: Goldeneye in FPSs This game fucking sucks. Shit is constantly just flying in from off-screen before you can even react and you die in one hit and lose all your power. It's just full of trial and error trollshit memorization.
Why do normies hold this as one of the best SHUMPS? It looks good and sounds good, but the gameplay is most important, and it's ass. I am endlessly fascinated by the development of Super Mario World
sadly tcrf doesn't have everything regarding the giga leak. Where can I read up more on this? Post images, videos, articles, and other fragments of video gaming history from the 1980s, 1990s, all the way up until 2007.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WtL5YnozEHU God fucking dammit to hell this fucking piece of software.
RetroArch on paper is the end-game best idea ever: it combines all of the systems in a platform that is ported to just about everything, but god dammit it fucking sucks to set up and change ANYTHING on here. There's even more than one menu for fucking controls, it's so god damn scattered for everything. I feel like I'm diffusing a bomb every time I try to change something because if I push one thing wrong my whole install is unrecoverably fucked. I've been emulating since 1997 and I have never used a mainstream emulator that's this confusing and frustrating to use.
Programmer-fags, can RetroArch be saved by a high functioning autist that can whittle down the options to shit anyone ever needs to actually adjust and is easy to undo when you fuck up? I love retro handhelds and all-in-one mini gameboxes, but RetroArch is making it more of a pain in the ass than a good time. >256 levels of pressure
>within 2 millimeters of travel
who thought this was a good idea? This game wasn't Kool at all Holy shit this mogs Contra 3 garbage so hard This game is a piece of fucking shit. The 12 best platformers on PSX that aren't Crash or Jumping Flash
I'm only talking about pure platformers here or the closest to that there is, no Mega Man style action-platformers (so no Blasto or Adventures of Little Ralph), no action-adventure game with some platforming (Tomb Raider, Akuji), and no "I don't know what to call this but since I'm retarded I'll call it a platformer" (Spyro).
Missing from the list are Johny Bazookatone and M&Ms ShellShocked. That's because they suck. If it weren’t for the cunts at SoA, Sonic would have had a blonde human girlfriend with giant baps Why didn't Japs like this? What happened? >most popular and best selling computer game series of the entire 1980s and first half of the 90s
>no new games in over 20 years
>no remakes or re-releases of any kind
What's the deal with this? Literally everything gets remade now. Why has this series been pretty much completely forgotten? What's your favorite sega system?
Mine would probably be the underrated master system. I absolutely Wonder Boy and Fantasy star as well as all the cool homebrew. Probably wouldn't win in a head to head with the nezz but definitely my 2nd favorite 3rd gen console. best gameplay in the series right before it jumped the shark with THUG2 Discuss the state of emulation, any news or discussion on settings. Just a reminder that you are still my bitch... and you'll always be my bitch. Take care anon. But instead of 2KB RAM it has 64KB and copy protected cartridges. Would Nintendo or Sega or Atari even have bothered to compete? Keyboard and BASIC + KERNAL cartridge extra of course (making it a full C64) What is the best looking gen 6 game? i just got a fuckin SPECCY
a fuckin ZX SPECCY!!!!
WHAT GAMES DO I NEED FOR THIS?
im open to anything;
>speccy general >buy a fighting game
>get lord of the rings tier epicness
Neat. Just started playing Neverhood. Am I expected at some point to read all that massive info dump on the walls? Happy anniversary taffers! Why did they handle this villain so poorly? It would have been great if they'd kept his motivations ambiguous and left you to wonder whether he really did have Britannia's best interests in mind, and might even be a better icon for its care than the Avatar, but then they just included a hamfisted cutscene of his ugly golem mug at the very beginning of the game where he comes right out and says "Oh by the way I'm EVIL, got it? Mua ha ha evil laugh". Seems like a big narrative miss. Ehhhh, im not feeling it. The large sprite and low view distance doesn't suit the game style very well. The music is grating, and the low health beep is extreme ear rape. The map doesn't feel open and fun to explore. I think people just hyped this game up because it was impressive for a gameboy game
I couldn't completely beat the original Legend of Zelda on my own... ;-; I got so close though!
My goal was to beat the game blind without any guide, with only the original game manual as any 'extra' added material. I managed to somehow discover every heartpiece, find and complete every dungeon, get the magic sword and the blue ring all on my own wit.
But then.. Dungeon 9... I spent literal hours searching my way through that forsaken skull maze and wasting keys. So for the final stretch, I watched a guide on how to navigate it. I feel a bit bummed I couldn't do the challenge, but I was happy to finally beat the original game.
Keep in mind, I did this all in one sitting. I started my challenge on a previous save and got really far, but my save was wiped due to some battery issue probably. So I bunkered down and spent all of Sunday on it. I was just way to tired at the end and didn't want to lose my progress again, so forgive me /vr/.
Oh, the game is a lot of fun btw. I loved how open it was. What's the consensus on what the best Gran Turismo game is? >duh shotgun is baad ughhh!
Meanwhile the shotgun in Quake takes like 12 shots to kill anything and posers like that game How come the French put more effort into their CPC conversions than the Brits? Was it really that easy to make a Speccy game and make a few "minor" changes for the CPC? xxXX---------KOOL /VR/ GAEMS-------------XXxx
WHAT IS THE KOOLEST OF EM ALL?
zzZZ-------------------------------------ZZzz What the fuck were they thinking? Magazines were soul back in the olden days >Atari was going to be the distributor for the Famicom in North America but coleco fucked up the deal because they released Donkey Kong on their home computer thinking they had the rights
>the US could have had the famicom 2 years earlier and the NES wouldn't exist OK I have to ask WTF doom engine!
Why are people so obsessed over this engine?
Like why?
It has serious limitations and restrictions. It wohuld literally be better to desighn your game idea from the ground up in a real modern game engine.
>b-b-b--b Retro
Look most source ports are nor retro and you are effectively playing this newly made engine.
>b-b-b-b- then the game would not be retro
The Quake 3 engine is free to use and retro.
Why are people not using it?
Like can you explain this to me?
>Muh mods!
Excluding basically attaching your newly made game to a existing retro popular game why make a mod if you can make the game from scratch?
>Muh models and sounds I can use
Look at this shit! At this point you are fighting the doom engine to make your game.
>Iris! Iris...
Zero...
>Hang in there, Iris.
Please... stay away from Repliforce... Let's live together in a world where only Reploids exist.
>Iris, there's no world just for Reploids. It's only a fantasy.
Kill humans. Behead humans. Roundhouse kick a human into concrete. Slam dunk a human baby into the traschan. Crucify filthy humans. Contiminate a human's food. Launch humans into the sun.Stir fry humans in a wok. Toos humans into active volcanoes. Leak coolant into a human's gas tank. Judo throw humans towards an Axe Max. Twist humans' heads off. Report humans to the IRS. Karate chop humans in half. Curb stomp pregnant humans. Trap humans in quicksand. Crush humans in the press disposer. Liquify humans in a vat of acid. Eat humans. Dissect humans. Exterminate humans in the gas chamber. Stomp human skulls with dash boots. Cremate humans in the oven. Lobotomize humans. Mandatory abortions for humans. Grind human fetuses in the garbage disposal. Drown humans in fried chicken grease. Vaporize humans with a buster. Kick Dr. Cain down the stairs. Feed humans to Wheel Gator. Slice humans with a beam saber. Total human death... With you.
>Iris!
>Iris!
>Iris!
>Iris!
>Nooo!! This isn't happening!! There's no reason for me to go on! What... What am I fighting for!? I know there were several revisions. What are some unreleased/unfinished /vr/ games that have playable prototypes/demos out? How can i enjoy these games without being embarrassed that i am an adult and have no friends to play with? I always felt bad for the red bomberman from 64 he just gets nuked for no reason Was the SNES the system of choice for the serious game player? Time to talk about a forgotten cyberpunk that had a cute anime chick. RIP to a great series.
Garou Densetsu forever. How were people supposed to play PS2 games with a keyboard and mouse support back in the day, like Half-Life or Dirge of Cerberus? You're not going to sit on the couch with a keyboard and mouse on your lap, and you can't even put the PS2 on your desk and hook it up to a monitor because there's no VGA on this thing. Maybe if you had a 14" TV you could place that on your desk, but then you'd have to move your desktop monitor someplace else. It is time, anons, the weather is getting warmer and we need those summer breeze music retro video games, noaw.
Retro games with summer feeling, summer setting, breeze chill music. It's honestly pretty horrific that they changed the colors of this controller. Localizers missed that the Super Mario World logo purposely had all 4 colors. They missed that the 4 colors appear in the special world. They missed that the 4 colors constantly appeared in later games, like Yoshi's Island.

target-earth.net/wiki/doku.php?id=blog:pc98_devtools What's your list of must play couch co-op games? I'm looking for genesis/SNES up to ps1/n64 mostly.
Whether it be fighting, party, platforming, minigames. Just anything kino Jimmy Neutron, Boy Genius for the PS2. Are the 3 Mega Man Legends games (1, Tron Bronne, 2) on PS1 worth playing? Just post what emulators I should be running, I'm tired of guessing. Geez, installing the ode on fz-10 looks intimidating, how hard it's actually?
Modding/Repair Thread! I like having fun. Vidya is fun, Tell me about your favourite (retro) video-games, can be any platform, any genre. I want to hear about what makes these games your favourites. Bonus question, what is your favourite game soundtrack/song?
I'm a big fan of platformers, my favourite being the first Crash Bandicoot title. It's so much fun to blast through levels and collecting gems, I always manage to find 'the zone' the state where playing it is a rhythmic experience. I also recently beat Sonic CD (on PC unfortunately), and I gotta say that the soundtrack (J/PAL) is all killer. Hey /vr/, I didn't know where to post this so I figured I'd just post it here.
I have come into ownership of some old floppy disks. Some of them are just random shit, but two caught my eye.
They are labeled
Ubi Soft
Disk X of 3
High Density
At the top they say "Volume Special #125B-11F2"
Not sure what I'm looking at, I thought maybe it was a game, but it doesn't say. And there's only Disk 1 & 2
Did I find some old internal Ubisoft documents from 1993?
I'm a Mid 20s Zoomer so I never used floppy disks, is this just some game?
I'm planning on getting a Floppy Disk Reader anyways. >franchise dies in a cliffhanger
ecco tides of time, right? why does this lower your banana coin/lives count when loading into a save? i had like 20 of each and they were reduced to less than half that. THIS SHIT IS FUCKING IMPOSSIBLE
I CAN'T DODGE AND MOVE AND SHOOT AT THE SAME TIME ;-; Start collecting Saturn, they said... So can the PC Engine Output in AV with this thing? I’m thinking of getting one. Also will it work without the CD unit? Strange and uncompromising weeb NES platformer with no concessions whatsoever to Westernization by a literallywho publisher/developer. Why they decided to localize it in North America is a total mystery but there you have it. /vr/oom thread because I noticed there isn't one yet.
Post racing games only you've played edition Giving Donkey Kong a bug spray enema? And where's Mario? Who's this random fuck MC you're playing instead? >you purchased my wares so now you must die
What the fuck was his problem? anyone remembers this? how good was it acually? Me?
Snake's Revenge
The most hardcore Meta Gear game, made by the original Castlevania team.
The game that inspired Kojimbo to go back to work and make Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake What does /vr/ think of Shogo: Mobile Armor Division? Jock jams in videogames was an...interesting moment in time. Let's have a thread to talk about old Windows games. Things Chip's Challenge, Skifree, Jezzball. Or the discs that came packaged with 50 or 100 games. I want to be reminded about the kinds of things that existed back then.
Does anybody remember "Rats!" ? I wish Zork got this kind of love It's kinda amazing how many decent movie-based games we had back in the day, something that no longer exists in modern gaming. >the two best-selling Japanese games of the 90's
What's the verdict? this comes on-screen. what are you feeling right now? My favorite Mortal Kombat game :) Started a new town for Spring. Anyone else playing retro Animal Crossing? This is probably not worth a whole thread but there isn't really an equivalent of /g/'s stupid questions threads here.
Anyways, how do crt shaders/effects look at 1440p compared to 4k? I've heard 1080p is shit for shaders but never heard much about 1440p. I used to use 4k shaders with retroarch and it always looked great, but I've been interested in a retrotink 4k, and it can only do 1440p with hdr and bfi. Everything else is junk compared to picrel. And I say this as someone who's completed Phantasy Star 4 What's the best sprite work in vidya? Why am I unable to get into Resident Evil 2 but found RE1 so addictive and comfy? How did gamers react to this character when he was invented in 2000? Serious question: do you understand what the characters are saying without the subtitles? stryder couldn't really measure up to become a bigger franchise huh Can be anything, I don't mind. I just want to feel like I'm in a Platoon / Full Metal Jacket movie. Which ones are legit stone cold classics and which ones are just overhyped meme games? This game is more annoying than fun. I want to like it, but the game won't let me Is this the greatest (retro) asset-flip of all time?
What are some other examples of this? The first couple RE games? >One of my closest friends as a kid.
>Every time they came over, the only game they EVER wanted to play was picrel.
>I got so sick and tired of playing this shitty Mario Party clone that I took the disc and scraped it against a brick wall until it didn't work anymore.
Anybody else have an experience like this, or was I just an asshole kid? >fossil creatures than can be revived
>a safari for exotic creatures
>experiments in genetically altered creatures
>a creature created digitally
Sometimes I forget how inspired and well-thought out the half sci-fi premise of the first game was. the ducktales dos game came with a paper code sheet to decipher picrel. as a kid i thought this was just something neat for you to do. what are some other interesting methods of anti-piracy? i know earthbound will do various things to make the player miserable, like spawning way more enemies than usual and wiping all your saves if you actually make it to the final boss in this state. Just make a modern replica with FFB, how hard is it to do? A good wheel setup is too expensive and bothersome.
Discuss controllers. Well, /vr/? What was your favorite gaming magazine? It's the sequel to SOS on the SNES, fully 3d.

I hate twatter links too but that's where to download it, for some reason he hosted it on mega.nz instead of GitHub... If you don't wanna go down that route it's already pre-patched on some sites, I don't think I can link those though.
Anyone try it? >same ethnic group gets genocided twice
Wow, Square REALLY didn't like rat people. this door used to make me incredibly angry I just think they're neat I am tired of these Kongs. I am tired of being caught in the tangle of their lives. Such a shit design. I wanted to see a goddess not fucking Reyoji as a tranny Serious question: can this game be enjoyed by someone who isn't a 14yo Square/Disney fan? I'm considering trying it. I have no bias for or against it, it was a huge hit and I like that it has real time combat with beat em up elements. But I looked up some cutscenes and it just looks like something of a fever dream, I'm not even sure if I should cringe or I just don't get what's going on. Some serious 2deep4u drama starring Donald Duck going to a different dimension, really? I just like this mix of action/RPG with 3rd person view, that's all. Anything from Game & Watch or Tiger Games Now that its one flaw has been fixed (the narrow field of view), can we finally agree that advance 2 is a top tier sonic game? I dont care for retro games but I love the music so am going on a journey to explore machines I missed. I love the Commodore 64 sound so what other machines can compete? Why was the Tetris name used? They just don't do em like that anymore. Somehow modern games with isometric graphics almost always look like soulless shit compared to back then.
