Board: /vr/
"/vr/ - Retro Games" is 4chan's imageboard for discussing retro console video games and classic arcade games.
This board is for the discussion of classic, or "retro" games, including consoles, computer games, arcade games (including pinball) and any other forms of video games. Retro gaming means platforms launched in 2001 and earlier, and official game titles for those platforms released no later than December 2007 (homebrew console games made after this date will be permitted). The Microsoft Xbox, Nintendo GameCube, Nintendo Game Boy Advance, and Sony PlayStation 2 will now be considered "retro".

Memes are fine too, it's good to make fun of ourselves from time to time I think. And no having "too sexy" women isn't a flaw or a legitmate criticism. >teleports into u
>throws u into ceiling >your star is a blonde European lady
>or a dark haired Japanese lady
Was was this dichotomy so common? I need this series to come back or some suggestions for games with a similar tone.
https://youtu.be/FuWVbDMYFDo it could be a revolutionary concept, mechanic, nostalgia, gameplay, music, etc.
for me itd be Donkey Kong Country 2, the fun i had with it as a kid is so memorable, back then i didnt have internet, so i had to discover everything on my own, and i played it daily nonstop till i discovered everything. this guy sucks at super metroid (like how do you fuck up the old tourian shinespark?) but his music skills are pretty good
https://youtu.be/FumsqKxkp5Q
the game would have been even better if played this song instead of the ridley fight music on the escape sequence
what's your best clear time? mine was 0:53, but i was cheating by the rules of super metroid speedrunning. i was playing on an emulator with a ps3 controller with L2 bound to run and R2 bound to weapon swap so i could hold down run while 30hz shoulder pumping easier and swap weapons really fast
i didn't use savestates or save at all though, and the main blunders i made were that i just can't do the crazy wallhop out of the bomb area consistently, took 3 cracks to mockball for the super missiles, and actually almost died to ridley
i had a mental block on how to fight ridley without screw attack for years until i read his ASM code block and then i was like oh, he acts like a fighting game character where he reads your inputs and coordinates and tries to figure out what to do, and then i never died to him again Ok so what are the essential arcade style games on this thing? At the moment it's a Super Mario World / Gameboy machine for me. Had no idea games were just as expensive 20 years ago for even more primitive gameplay Post some callbacks in /vr/ games. I'm a sucker for this shit. >biggest SNES game is 6MB in size
>CD games hold 650MB
are there any CD games which use most or all of a disc just for game code and graphics, not music or FMV? it seems like you could have a fuckhuge 16/32 bit game with nice graphics I randomly remembered this game today and started thinking about how much this game series seriously impacted my childhood and life and how nobody even knows it existed today. Do you guys have any similar games in your life? >However in recent years,Tekken 4has recovered to the point of being widely praised, and this is largely for its innovation in gameplay, atmosphere, and attention to detail
>As of 2024, Harada revealed that Tekken 4 has fully grown in stature and has already sold over 4,350,000 copies, the same amount as its predecessorTekken Tag Tournament, despite when the games were only sold in PS2 copies and were not available in other platforms.
>Harada has gone on to call Tekken 4 the best game in the series weeks after the2024 Evolution Championship Series, in an interview with commentator and former championJustin Wong.
Apologize. Is it worth a playthrough? What's the best party to start with with no duplicate members? What was the best retro wrestling game ? >Virtua Fighter was seen as popular and better the SF in japan
Why? Its just proto Tekken/DoA, they have VF charavters in DoA https://youtu.be/GENxFaMzLYk What were you doing on September 1996? >requires you to take your GBA out into the sun to play the game properly
>can't see shit because the GBA screen isn't backlit
How did this get four games? you fags talk about literally everything other than the grandfather of video games.
I would argue pinball machines aged much better than most early video games did, and I think they're much more fun.
What's your favorite table? What are you playing on and what tables are you trying?
My favorite table by far is cyclone. I love the amusement park theme and sound effects/music. Reminds me off going to theme parks with my parents when I was young. Mainly playing that and some other "simple" tables like pinbot on vpx. What's your favorite Langrisser game? last thread;

>Current state of weekend multiplayer: Alive How did you "embrace" retro gaming? I reached Space Mama's Crater, from what I've seen in regards to this game's discussion, this and Eat at Joe's are some of the hardest levels in the game.
I can see why this level is infamous, the first section is fine but the 2nd act is really tough with the tricky jumps through purple lums, the 3rd act has a lot of annoying spikes and backtracking in order to get the last cages.
And then you have to fight a boss with an inflated HP, a super long "avoid shit" part where you can't hurt the boss and then her laser projectiles seem to follow a pattern then it quickly changes.
I still can't beat the boss because I lose all my lives during the lase part (or even as early as the start of the 2nd act) and I still don't want to use continues. What does the C stand for? I'm looking into playing an old Final Fantasy on emulator. I've got:
FF III on DS
FF IV on SNES, GBA, DS (also a translated jp ver fsr)
FF V on GBA
FF VI on SNES, GBA
FF Tactics Advance
FF Tactics A2
Which of these should I start with? The only Final Fantasy experience I have is playing the first one on the phone years ago, but I'm fine with playing a hard one. Also how much of a difference is there between versions? Latest sub:

The SRB2 community is full of shit anyways (imagine treating mods as "intellectual property" at the same time as "art" where you MUST have a "license" to even use it on an open-source game), so there's no issue to "steal" them from the "artists.".
If you have an idea of what I should add, then don't hesitate to ask. remember this classic /vr/ scam Underrated. One of the best games to play when drunk or high with a friend or two >europeans couldn't even access 30% of the game because of a bug my thing is, with the 64, we got Diddy Kong Racing, Super Mario 64, Conker's Bad Fur Day, Banjo Kazooie for great games.
> i dunno if Donkey Kong 64 was that great, feels empty.
> some decent fighters on the Nintendo 64, even though they look blocky
> some decent wrestling games
a pretty solid library, it's hard to boo. i also really like the variations, your Jungle Green, Atomic Purple smoke... yeah, the controller wasn't the most comfortable, but i love the colors.
I mean, by this era, Nintendo was really (with their N64 commercials) embracing their more edgy Attitude Era. like, Nintendo weren't really having that Sega Attitude, but they kinda had to match that because that's just how society had kinda changed at that time.
we were in that Nickelodeon/MTV kinda gross-out humor era, and Nintendo had to match that attitude with these commercials, which to be fair I think they did a great job with such games like:
> Mario Party 2
> GoldenEye 007 - game changer (Perfect Dark i like a lot as well)
> Banjo-Kazooie
> Conker's Bad Fur Day
> Super Smash Bros.
> Mario Kart 64 - i like that way better than the Super Nintendo one.
> WCW vs nWo World Tour
> Battletanx (3DO)
> Tony Hawk's Pro Skater
> Mickey's Speedway USA - solid cart racer, i don't think people give enough love to Mickey Speedway USA
> Duke Nukem: Zero Hour
> Turok 2: Seeds of Evil - graphics are pretty legit
> F-Zero X
> Star Wars Episode I: Racer
> San Francisco Rush: Extreme Racing
> Paper Mario
> Yoshi's Story
> Castlevania 64

Not a perfectly executed game, slightly underbaked, but pure soul and creativity. This kind of innovation in platforming action is what the genre needed more of. do you think there's a subset of Sonic fans who herald this as the TRUE 3D Sonic experience What was it like to grow up playing retro vidya during the '80s, '90s, and early '00s with those living in the Spanish and Portuguese speaking countries? target-earth.net/wiki/doku.php?id=blog:pc98_devtools Has anyone attempted to bleach a yellowed console by leaving it out in the sun? How did it work out? Now presenting: the greatest game ever made. Cyberdillo? More like Cyberdildo! I have a newfound appreciation for this game after playing Checkered Flag and Club Drive for Jaguar. In terms of choppy as hell primitive 3D racers this one gives Virtua Racing on Genesis a run for its money. Especially with the robust physics engine and cool details like immersive audio for driving through tunnels. The Efu Emu Taunzu. Adored by the Japanese, a complete mystery to the west. What can you tell me about it? >Has a million different settings
>Forces you to use either a consolized UI or a poorly designed WIMP interface to access them
>Forces you to set all your keybinds through an ass-backwards RetroPad metaphor
Why.
I like RetroArch in theory, but it is badly in need of a better user interface. This isnt a good game.
There I said it. I am finally playing Viewtiful Joe for the first time and it completely lives up to the hype. It is more accessible than DMC 1 without sacrificing any of the depth. I haven't played all of Kamiya's games yet, but this is by far my favorite currently. A masterful fusion of the maze game and the single-screen platformer genres. Underrated. How much of this game's setting now looks antiquated in the modern Internet? Did you play the DKC trilogy as they came out in real time back in the 90s? I somehow ended up with Gothic 1/2/3 on steam from some shitty keysite.
is it worth playing or is it generic western RPG slop? What are some good games based on classic-era (pre-2 Stupid Dogs) Cartoon Network cartoons? Other than the Taito Flintstones and Jetsons games which are a given. Which game do people play online these days? I want to git gud, but don't know which game to start with. Theres something about the games on this system that makes them feel other worldly and comfy. NES games have the same feel but on Gameboy it is amplified. Any psychological or scientific explanations for this? Also, post your favorite original Gameboy games. Wtf this is probably the best co-op shooter on console Super Bros 14 (Kaiketsu Yanchamaru 3) is one of the most well hidden gems on the Famicom.
Recommended for fans of Mega Man, Ninja Gaiden, Castlevania and Goemon. It's gotta be HUNDREDS lol. Any brand consumer CRT + composite is all you need. RGB and PVM is cringe If you could only have 1 retro console and 5 games for it, what would you choose? is it worth it if you don't have a CRT? Surreal retro vidya thread? RIP David Lynch YOU GET:
>RGB monitors and SCART cables for all your gaming systems
YOU LOSE:
>playing games at the proper speeds and resolution
What was it like, yuros? What makes a Beat'em Up game good?
I rarely see discussions about their design philosophy compared to other genres like platformes, but I bet most people have at least one they are very fond of. Fuck you Pi(ko)ece of shit
Next time, you will show respect for what former industry members do, and not threaten them to get data because "I'm the owner of the IP!!"
https gofile (dot ) io/d/BOwO2r the fuck people mean by "janky controls"? Has anyone ever compiled a list of all the foot running racing games? Am I missing any?
I don't mean games that include a running minigame, I mean games that are all about racing on foot.
In my years of gaming, these are the only three I ever came across not counting track and field games.
This needs to be talked about.
Mad Dash Racing also has my vote as best on-foot racing game ever made. >Ulukai! Bring me the seven golden ass scratchers from Dashoram! I cannot scratch my ass unless I have all seven! Do this or be reverted for this trespass against the Yods! Do you use a third party controller from back in the day? https://drive.google.com/file/d/1IAuuv0JY8GVDwDxhJflhCDhBLuhgPs5B/view >is better than mario kart in your path Is it fair to day that even though Sonic has Japanese roots, basically everything people know and love Sonic for is a purely American creation that Japan had nothing to do with? Describe Phantasy Star Online gameplay Every single mission he gives except Grand Theft Aero sucks. It's like the entire point of this character was to stack the shittiest missions in the game should i get a ps2 in 2025 So what's the differences between the UltraHdmi, hispeedido and PixelFX Setting aside everything else about the game, Chrono Trigger actually has a great sense of humor, especially around Ozzie and his hijinks. Fighting against save points is pretty clever too. I wonder who was responsible for the jovial sense of adventure. Yuji Horii of Dragon Quest fame? I like Dragon Quest too, but it's no Chrono Trigger. Was it just a written shorthand or did people say "PSX" in the spoken tongue as well? I've only ever seen it in writing.
Don't make this a thread arguing about whether people ever called it the PSX whatsoever Were the early LCD monitor and TVs awful for retro gaming? How long, in your opinion, did it take for them to improve in terms of responsiveness and color reproduction to become suitable for proper gaming? Was Spyro the ocarina of time for PS1?
I mean think about it, at its core those games aren't that dissimilar, even if OOT has much more puzzles.
>collecting jewels
>helping NPCs
>collecting mcguffins
>killing all kinds of enemies
>each boss requires a different strategy upgraded my hard drive, post obscure xbox games 1 > 2 > 3
But they're all good. 1 is just the best. 2 and 3 fucked up the level design and added too many dumb minigames / forced backtracking. 2's homeworlds are kino though. Is N64 back?
This cart sounds way better than ED64 which is what the sperg boomers recommend around here admit it, this was the peak of all gaming, and the peak of SOULful experiences. the possibilities were endless. there were more iconic, genre defining moments than any other era. Sure the saturn was off sniffing glue in the corner, but even that had its charms. Never was there such a huge difference between the consoles, every system had unique graphics, controls and genres they excelled at. face it boomers, it was so much more than the flat 2d era could bring us, and we still got amazing 2d games in gen 5. and face it zoomers, your games are shit and no one likes you. gen 5 is PEAk

it will never be topped 90% of this game's challenge would be gone if the screen scrolled down when you fell and let you land on the floor below David Lynch passed away so let's have a Link's Awakening thread. After all the game was massively influenced by Twin Peaks. Post and discuss anything related to NES or Famicom. ANYWAY?! WHADDA YOU MEAN "ANYWAY"?! Pick a random (score based) arcade game and post your high score. If you see a score and think you can beat it then go for it! Kicking things off with some humble Space Invaders.
Previous thread: >>11479090 Older systems will always be superior because the limitations force devs to get the most of out them, when today's stuff is just diminishing returns with graphics and other bloat.
Games like the Guardian Legend and Mr Gimmick are very related. I love this style of gravity based physics game, and Lunar Lander is incredible for 1979. if it was the first thats even more impressive.
I need more of them, what are your favorites /vr/? any machine
https://youtu.be/McAhSoAEbhM?si=reQeY2JgIOQnur19 The ultimate emulation pc under like 300 dollars Kek I love the retro aesthetic in HL2.
The retro PC everywhere are beautiful especially nowadays. Most locations will have a PC in them.
However I have to ask is there any in universe logic for the resistance to use PCs on most locations?
Like why would they have a PC?
HL1 is all in a government facility so the computers make sense since they are used to send messages or run simulations or write reports.
However why would there by PCs in other resistance locations? What are they using for a PC? Especially a PC that ma can be from the year 2004 (or 1998? When did the invasion start?).
>They use them to record data from measurements.
In science places yes however WTF are they measuring in normal rebel outposts?
Radios make sense for communication however why PCs?
>Security cameras.
Yes however seeing as the monitors are CRTs and these are obviously 2004 PCs the HDDs do not have the capacity to record all video feeds and will fill up short.
In 2004 there where VHS and other analog forms of recording video that did the same purpose, possibly more quiet. Why would the resistance have a gigantic PC brick who needs uninterrupted power, consumes lots of energy and makes lots of noises, Hard drives and fans are noisy especially in computers from this era and the CD or DVD drive will also be loud.
So why would they have them?
You know a PC for recording or video footage from all cameras and registering equipment would be a great idea... Only not possible for a PC made in 2004. More like PCs from 2024!
So why do they have them? Laptops are a far smarter option for transportation laptop_VS_PC meme. And you need them on the go so they are a better option.
Other equipment like radios makes more sense. Despite being gigantic
-No need to restart
-can run 24/7
-no noise output
1/2 6th Gen was the birth of modern gaming and has no distinction from modern gaming, and modern gaming isn't good compared to retro gaming (2D and early 3D gaming). I don't care about 00s baby nostalgia this is just objectivity.
Also, PS2 won that era primarily because of its backward compatibility adding way more good games then it had alone, or that X Box or GC had at all. Now that's some baaaad mooooojoo.... Xboc: y2k futurism
Kiddycube: sparks a sense of of unsettling emptiness
Psx-2: a mesmerising cube orbiting in the pitch black ethereal realm
do you miss this kind of innovative ui design? Is there a game from the Windows 98 or XP era that you could not get to run on modern hardware no matter what you tried? if so which one was it? Holy shit this game has s o v l off the charts >I took Joseph from a manga; it is a reference to 'Joseph Joestar' from Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure.
https://www.crimson-head.com/interviews/kenichi-iwao Due to some recent developments in the PS2 loading scene it is worth considering upgrading from old OPL installs to something new like:
Unofficial Open PlayStation Loader (uOPL)
Extreme Elite Boot+
English Translated PlayStation 2 Broadband Navigator.
If you're curious what has changed about these I recommend looking into it here:
https://www.psx-place.com/resources/unofficial-open-ps2-loader-uopl.1523/
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ooH0FjltsyE I'm a big fan of the NES game despite its shortcomings but the SNES game is just so bland.
The physics feel too weighty, the controls are bad (how am I supposed to do a running jump punch when running is Y, B is jump and A is punch? There was NOTHING wrong with having punch and run on the same button like on NES, you don't need to get cute just because the controller has more buttons).
The camera is so bad that you constantly have to re-adjust it with the L-R button, in some cases I even keep the button held just to see what's coming ahead
The musics and SFX are super bland, getting hit has no sound, the invicibililty power up has no music
Enemies are also super bland, at least in the NES version it felt like half of the enemies were romans or at least humans, here it's like "hedgehog, bats and birds galore", and of course the oh so classic euro platformer "drops of water hurt you" (to be fair the NES had a couple of those but here they're everywhere in the caves) and other shit you can't see coming like spikes appearing randomly from the floor
The level progression makes the game feel drawn out as well, it's usually something like "level theme (forest, ice, etc)-> cave -> level theme again -> cave again". Having the thematic levels grouped together would have made it feel better
I wouldn't be so disappointed if I didn't like the NES game so much, despite being a super short game with basically only 2 (lame) bosses it's such a fun game Which console RTS was the best? 3D fighters are slow moving and janky
Mario is boring >Final Fantasy 2 is the worst one because... uh... it just is
Why does no one have any actual criticisms of this game? Has anyone tried to un-yellow a controller? I got two desr-10 longboys but they are very sun yellow and dirty. I'm concerned the text and printing may get messed up if I do it like online says to Can we get a comfy Makaimura thread going? ITT: games that are crap but have great music/soundtracks. The game that comes to my mind is the Shitty 3DO port of Doom, where the music is actually good CD quality garage cover band material but the gameplay itself is so awful I can't play it for more than 20 minutes. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_Mnb6ehhe1Y I was looking for pc-98 music (preferably romance-focused games ) that gives an early spring feel and most of them are gone.
Please share whichever ones you like the most

Thanks Early Bethesda games are... fascinating
Post pre-Todd Howard slop Is it worth buying a Summercart64 if I have one of those cheap ED64plus clones still working? besides Animal Forest for obvious reasons the only games that I couldn't play on my flashcart were No Mercy and Puyo Puyo Sun.
Also, are the ones being sold at aliexpress legit? Really can't decide which version of this to play
I have snes (emulator)
I have android port (pic related)
I even have pixel remaster and gba version all on my phone right now
Might just play android port can't beat touchscreen controls and smooth textured Was this peak boss fight design? When it comes to Fighting Game girls, the women from Tekken are underrated imo. Wtf I had only ever played CV64 and always thought this was a completely different game. So far it's the same thing with one new intro stage. Even the enemy placement has been similar. Same traps on the castle towers.
Fuck me man, I thought I was going to be playing a whole new game. Can't even tell ya how disappointed I am right now. Flip Edition
