Board: /vr/

"/vr/ - Retro Games" is 4chan's imageboard for discussing retro console video games and classic arcade games.

↑↑↓↓←→←→ BA START
triforce
This board is for the discussion of classic, or "retro" games, including consoles, computer games, arcade games (including pinball) and any other forms of video games. Retro gaming means platforms launched in 2001 and earlier, and official game titles for those platforms released no later than December 2007 (homebrew console games made after this date will be permitted). The Microsoft Xbox, Nintendo GameCube, Nintendo Game Boy Advance, and Sony PlayStation 2 will now be considered "retro".

Dormmate got a new TV (4k, only HDMI), and while it probably will work great with the PS5, I still would like to be able to play on a game console with Actual Games.
So, I ask, what is the best, most cost effective way to connect my PS2 to this TV via Component input? I have the retrovision cables so I'm obviously autistic about video quality, but I would also not have to spend $300+ on something that I am only going to use for PS2 Games (and maybe Sega Saturn but I got a small crt for that so it isn't a priority).
Are there any sub $100 options for just Component or are all those options cheap crap. Low latency desired

Playing RE0 for the first time
20312777.5_re0
Genuinely, why do people hate it?

The lack of an item box and having to command a second character makes the game more busy, which after playing REmake on autopilot for years, is a nice change of pace, and it's sort of why I suspect people who only ever play Jill in RE1 with her 8 inventory slots instead of suffering as Chris with his 6.

Really, my only problem was how difficult some of the puzzles were, which only were difficult because I'm trying to rush the game and not spending 10 hours on finding a single solution. (For example the animal puzzle I'm sure I could have figured out if I gave it a good crack)

Welcome to the second entry in Icom's adventure game series. I would argue it's not as hard as Shadowgate although some would disagree; they did make certain parts a little easier than the computer originals, for example you're not on a time limit to solve the game before your brain goes to mush.

Really no other Zelda-like action adventure/RPG in Ancient Egypt?
sphinx
Sphinx has good visuals, atmosphere and amazing character models but the gameplay and level design is very rough. It's one of these games that immediately make you think "Oh, so that's why Zelda games are so good." You have to do every mundane thing twice in a row without any variation, like to make spikes that block your way disappear you have to climb up a rope, slowly sidle ledges and then pull a lever. Then, for whatever reason, you have to do the same thing 1:1 on the other side of the corridor

Despite being a generation after OoT, it doesn't have targeting or dodge rolling and pretty much 0 memorable enemies

The worst thing is the saving system though

I know /vr/ doesn't have many N fans but how come no one ever told me about this? Memorable ghost after memorable ghost, great pacing, its own charm that doesn't feel like generic Mario. Even dying is possible, which helps the atmosphere. At least I'm running around at low health for 2 hours now

I tried 3 before and thought the IP just wasn't for me. It was a bit too slow with more filler rooms, combat had that Hulk smash gimmick and it for some reason had way fewer unique ghosts than the first game seems to have? Probably also didn't help that I played RE Village right before

It’s one of those games where you think you’re just gonna sit down for a bit, and next thing you know, it’s night time. It’s proper kino, that is. The story’s like one of those old books you find in the attic, full of knights and magic and all that, but it’s good, it’s kino. And the battles, they make you think, don’t they? It’s not just mindless button smashing; it’s like a game of chess, but with fancy animations. Definitely kino. I mean, if you’re into that sort of thing, spending hours working out how to beat some bloke with a fancy hat, then yeah, it’s top-notch kino.

Secret of Evermore Bug Fix Patching
Secret_of_Evermore
So here's the problem /vr/. I want to play Secret of Evermore, but I found out there's a bunch of bugs with it. There's fixes for it, which I got from here http://assassin17.brinkster.net/soe_patches.htm to IPS patch myself. Problem is doing more than one of these to the same rom causes Snes9x to crash immediately after the Squaresoft intro ends, without fail. So I looked up and found this site https://greg-kennedy.com/SecretOfEvermore/index.php here. When I use the .sfc for the Secret of Evermore (USA) on this site, it says this
>Error patching the uploaded file.
>Exceeded filesize limit (expected 3145728 or 3146240 bytes).
>Please return to the index and try again.
However, when I go to right click -> properties check the .sfc file, it says
>3.00 MB (3,145,728 bytes)
I have no idea what the fuck is going on. I'm using the USA rom from vimm. Fails. I'm using the rom from CDRomance. Fails. I'm using the rom from wowroms. Fails. I have no clue what the fuck I'm doing wrong; can somebody please help me? I want to fucking play this game but this shit keeps failing me no matter what

My Dreamcast Died - replace CD Drive, buy GDEMU or return?
Sad-Little-Dreamcast
Hey oldanons of the board, I wanna pick your brains on something. I just bought myself a Dreamcast as a birthday present, but the CD drive died on me after only five days of use. I've tried cleaning the lens, adjusting the potentiometer, everything, but the laser itself is dead, it won't read anything. Bit put out since I had to pay £95 for it, most expensive console I've ever bought desu
Should I try and buy a new CD drive (probably £45-60) and replace it? Obviously this should restore the functionality but IDK how hard it is to install and how long it would last for (I assume it would have been lifted from another Dreamcast so has already been used, possibly for a long time)?
Should I try buying a GDEMU (would have to be one of those £30 clones off Aliexpress, I can't find an original one anywhere and I can't afford a MODE or that Russian USB-loader thing DESU) and try and run an SD card off it? I was hoping other anons could tell me how reliable/dependable these are, and how difficult they are to install. I mean at least this would let me keep my DC but that assumes these knockoff GDEMUs aren't janky chinkshit
Finally I could probably just demand to return the DC and insist on a refund, given that I bought on ebay with Paypal I think I could probably do that one way or the other (it lasted literally four uses over a fortnight before packing in entirely) but of course there's no guarantee I'd be able to find another more cheaply (or that it would be more reliable)
Anyone got any advice here? DESU I enjoyed the games I got to work on it and hope to be able to play it again but I feel pretty put out paying full price for a console that broke on me almost immediately... I don't really know anything about the DC that isn't on the consolemods wiki so I was hoping the oldfags of the board could show this lurker their wisdom. Would appreciate any help anons

Did I make a mistake choosing to play as the magic heavy class? In some of these longer missions, I have to bring something like 20 Trifluids just to make longer missions not take forever waiting for my TP to recharge over time. And my melee damage is slow and does shit damage, coupled with my low health pool. Did a mission the other day that took me nearly 50 minutes because I went in unprepared, and I'm only level 15. Feels like hitting max level will take a lifetime at this rate.

Does this interview finally settle all debates about the Sega Saturn? This board has some ridiculous arguments about the console, but it seems like we finally have all the answers from Hideki Sato

>Was the Saturn originally intended to be a 2D console? Or a 3D one?

>Sato: To be honest, in the beginning, I wasn’t thinking of 3D capabilities for the Saturn at all. This was partially my fault, but additionally, the game developers at Sega at the time had basically no knowledge of 3D game development. They had all been raised in the environment of 2D sprites and backgrounds, and the only developers who had any real experience with 3D were Yu Suzuki and AM2 with the Virtua series. >Actually, all of the other developers wanted to continue developing using the same system they were used to. If you looked at every single Sega employee within the home console division, there were practically no programmers or designers who had any knowledge of polygon technology.
>I had taken a look at Sega’s development teams at the time and concluded, “It’s going to be impossible for them to do 3D games.”
>I concluded that there was no way Sega’s development assets would be able to do 3D.
>However, the PlayStation completely embraced polygons.
>When we found out about that, we realized we were in trouble.
>Thankfully, the (Saturn) SH-2s could be linked in a cascade connection. A large amount of geometry calculations are required to do polygon graphics, and a single Saturn SH-2 was completely insufficient.
>With all the CPUs in the Saturn, only a tiny fraction of developers at Sega were able to make sense of them all and actually put them to use. For third parties… well, there was no way.
>I’m not sure if you call it a memory, but a regret I have is not going with one of our options to use the arcade system Model 1 as the base for the Saturn.
>We could have gone with 3D polygons with that kind of force.

the music is so good, the characters are very distinct, the story is literal insanity blowing my mind watching the northern crater fuckery go down, tifa and cloud exploring cloud's mind in this abstract as shit segment
never something I would have expected from an rpg from the 90s
and the gameplay is this great tried and true lego playset snapping orbs from one character to the next messing around constantly experimenting
so much side content too with meaningful rewards
this shit? GOOD

Is there any way to fix Final Fantasy games?
27bd93
The main problem they all share is the rate of encounters on the overworld map. Every single time you move one pixel, BAM, "random" encounter. It can take an hour to walk across a field to the next town because of the random encounter rate. And if you skip battles? Well, you'll get trapped at a boss and punished for not grinding, and have to start the WHOLE GAME OVER.

Is there any way to fix this?

There's no reason to buy this right? As I understand it SD2SNES is an open source project and Chinese SD2SNES carts are identical (besides maybe build quality)

SummerCart64
SC64vsED64X7
Why does nobody ever talk about this thing? Just found out it exists, and that has been around for over a year. Yet it's cheaper, open source, and has more features than an N64 Everdrive.

When it comes to N64 flashcarts however I only ever hear people talk about the Everdrive, it even fixes the reset to save/only writing the save to SD on next boot nonsense that all N64 Everdrives do.

What Made It Last?

You could go into pretty much any big box store in the US and still find a brand new copy on sale as late as 2013 and probably a little later in some areas.
What was it specifically about Diablo 2 that even when D3 was out it still was selling well while not a single other Diablo clone even came close.
Even the popular ones like Dungeon Siege and Titan Quest didn't have that staying power.

real strange Quake 1 map
map
I have a problem with my "xd2" Quake 1 map. While playtesting, I noticed that something strange was going on.

At first, it was just minor glitches—textures failing to load, walls clipping, or odd camera angles. But soon, things got weird. I'd enter a room, and everything seemed fine, but the moment I turned around, the walls would change. Passages I had just walked through vanished, replaced by solid walls or entirely new hallways. Doors that should have led back to other areas now opened into dark, cavernous spaces that I didn't recognize.

The monsters were another problem. Sometimes they behaved as expected, but other times, they seemed almost sentient. Shamblers walked through walls as if they were air, and sometimes they would freeze in place. On a few occasions, I faced invisible enemies.

I tried everything to understand the problem. I restarted the map, reloaded the game, even rebuilt the entire level from scratch. But each time, the same glitches reappeared, and each time, they seemed to get worse.

One night, in a desperate attempt to understand what was happening, I activated cheat codes and turned on "noclip," allowing me to move through walls and explore the map without restrictions. I hoped this would reveal the source of the problem—perhaps a broken trigger or a misplaced entity. But it only made things stranger.

As I drifted through walls, the map shifted around me. Rooms rearranged themselves, and corridors twisted and turned as if the map had a will of its own. I tried to reach the silver key, but it kept moving, always just out of reach. And when I tried to backtrack, the walls had closed in behind me, trapping me in a labyrinth of constantly changing geometry.

It's not a creepypasta—it's a sort of strange buggy map that reacts in a way I've never seen before.

It doesn't contain any viruses; it's just a strange map.

Can anyone understand the problem?

Sega Saturn homebrew

The Saturn homebrew scene has been pretty solid lately. Some of the best ones I've checked out are this Unreal Tournament port (just an impressive tech demo with one level). It does run like that on my actual Saturn. Cube Cat and Cold Case look good too.

I'd look up the top 100 of basically every 2D system I could emulate back in the early 2000's.
When basic-bitch laptops couldn't run anything 3d to save it's damn life.
So back then you emulated if you wanted to play games.
You got a shit-ass Logitech controller without Xinput.
But you emulated the shit out of games.
And now I've run out.
It completely floors me this is a concept that zoomies just don't fucking grasp.

I've been playing through Dark Cloud for the first and I'm nearing the end of Queens. It has been a fun, charming game.
I was surprised to see Rose come into the game with jiggle effects. She looks nice, just didn't expect this game to do that.
But I was even more surprised to go to the fortune teller hag. Granted, there are NPC's who tell you not to have your fortune read, but I did it anyways. Was not expecting her to jump on Toans head with his head being wrapped in her skirt and rub her crotch all over Toans face whilst screamin "Pumpkin pantie fortune telling".

Wario Land 4 is cool, I guess
wl4
maybe some fellas remember this game, or have talked about it. it's so simple but it feels so nice to play.

this level doesn't even have 20 levels, while another entries had 50 to 90 of these and even alternate exits and endings. so, I think wario land 4 is not perfect and very small, but it know how to make it few tricks real good.

the races after the frog switches, the bizarre-looking boss characters, the endings. those levels seemed like nothing, but you could take up to 15 minutes or more to find every secret in each level, something the Wario Land saga was already good at.

the transformations are back, but now the pace of the game feels much faster. things like the level exits and bosses have a time window to be beaten.

although another bad thing is that there's some missing transformations from past games. these would reduce even more in Wario Land: Shake it.

So overall, I think wl4 is a little too short, but it's nice to experience. not as good or grand as wl2, unfortuantely...

Okay hear me out, I don't think the 32X was a bad idea on paper(a built in Super FX chip on steroids that could eliminate the higher manufacturing costs and higher MSRPs that came with using cartridge enhancement chips like what the SNES was doing), it just came out way too late for most people to give a shit
Maybe they should've tried to release it in, say, 1992 or 1993, might have been better received

PC Versions / Ports
1709925866311386
What are some bad/worse/different PC Versions/Ports compared to Console?
Be that it removed exclusive content (no matter how small), broke/removed features, or even if it was a completely different game.

I ask because I'm trying to get rid of a large amount of bulk games I received, and I wouldn't want to get rid of the best version of the game if I had it, nor if it had a feature I preferred.
These pages helped a lot:

https://www.pcgamingwiki.com/wiki/List_of_PC_games_with_features_removed_compared_to_their_console_versions

but I'd like to know more about games possibly not listed, or specific games (You) anons are very autistic about. I'd love to hear about it. Anything helps.

MGS1 is a remake/reboot of MG 1 and 2 actually
metal-gear-1-2-wallpaper
It's crazy to think that everything people found incredible in MGS1 had already been done long time ago on a 8-bit microcomputer

-lots of similar names (Fox Hound, Outer Heaven...)
-the structure and game design are extremely similar
-the codec
-false codec advice that leads you into a trap
- breaking the 4th wall "turn off your MSX"
-the betrayal of a codec ally
-cigarettes that allow you to see infrared rays
-the box
-the radar
-the crawl
...

I just lost a lot of respect towards MGS1

Favorite Sound Effects and Sound Design In Games?
super-mario-bros-2-toad-mario-kart-8-png-favpng-yz8UJmXyhj5bzmftYwiHujh0S
I played Super Mario Bros a lot as a kid and the sound that plays when you picked up a mushroom was so distinct to me as a kid, it was loud and punchy, same with the "CLING!" sound from the coins. When I played the All Stars version years later I was disappointed at how much more plinky and hollow everything sounded.
Are sound effects the most underrated part of a video game? I honestly think its a big reason why I've always liked the AS versions less.

Title of a NES game
image0
I'm trying to remember the title of an old game for NES/Famicom I used to play when I was a child (in the 90s), so I'm trying to ask here too. The game was pretty hard so I couldn't get past the second level.
The gameplay was a platformer with puzzles to solve in order to open doors and proceed. The first level was a ruined castle full of paintings and the second one a sort of lab with big monitors. A detail I remember is that every time you got a puzzle wrong the music completely would stop for the rest of the level and basically softlock you, forcing to restart. Can you help me?
