Board: /vr/
"/vr/ - Retro Games" is 4chan's imageboard for discussing retro console video games and classic arcade games.
This board is for the discussion of classic, or "retro" games, including consoles, computer games, arcade games (including pinball) and any other forms of video games. Retro gaming means platforms launched in 2001 and earlier, and official game titles for those platforms released no later than December 2007 (homebrew console games made after this date will be permitted). The Microsoft Xbox, Nintendo GameCube, Nintendo Game Boy Advance, and Sony PlayStation 2 will now be considered "retro".

Fuck that lava level with the balloons Was this a reference to something? How did Activision come up with this shit? The way people talked about this game I thought it would make me cum buckets, but its just a pretty good pinball game instead. What is the real best video game pinball? We haven't had one of these since the Coolidge administration and I wanna see some golden age gaming talk. Thread rules are simple:
>You can only talk about games and systems made before the US release of the NES (1985). Everything before it from the CRT Amusement Device to stuff like Marble Madness is cool here.
>That's it.
I'm thinking about playing Rally X today. I played some (New) Rally X a few days ago and it was incredibly fun! The anxiety that you get when you have a bunch of cars behind you but you don't wanna smoke them out in order to preserve fuel is something I only really find with these older arcade games.

Bonus points if it has a killer soundtrack. Thoughts on retro remakes of older titles that are also considered retro? (Tempest 2000, Prince Of Persia, Battlezone 98, Hasbro Frogger, etc.)
Always found these interesting reinterpretations, even if some of them aren't that great I don't understand this Mario World ad Best Gundam games you've played on the ps2/cube/cast? >broken anti-aliasing, no mipmapping, no shaders, pathetically low VRAM and couldn't do 480p and had horrible blurry video quality and textures
Why do some believe the PS2 was more powerful than the Gamecube and Dreamcast? Not only did it have the worst looking and worst performing games of its generation, it also lacked key hardware features that even the N64 had. Major figures in the industry like Mikami and Itagaki even shat on it for how weak and difficult it was to work on the system. Could you recommend some pls? Even 15 years ago, every thread about any MMO on any site would always attract some UO poster who would start ranting about how garbage everything is compared to UO. They were like the Quakefags of MMOs.
Now it seems to be completely forgotten. Stuff like no save-stating, no fast-forward, no grinding, etc.
Personally, if I have to look at a guide more than 5 times to progress through the main story, then I’m dropping the game, because I am no longer capable of being immersed into the experience. I kissed Breath of Fire goodbye for this very reason. Sure, I COULD just walk around the overworld and spam A on unique spots until I touch them in the correct order, but that’s not fun, and I’m not a 6yo poorfag anymore. I can afford more than one game a month. There’s no reason to stick with a game if I have ANY reason to drop it and play something else. I'm having a fun time with Fire Emblem: Blazing Blade on the GBA.
I just beat the first 10 chapters, should I carry on or move onto the more complex FE games? I'm going to do a shit job of explaining what I mean but hopefully it's at least comprehensible
What are some games that are wildly different depending on which system you play them on? For example, James Bond Nightfire on console is radically different on PC: totally original set of missions.
Pic related is wildly different from its Genesis counterpart: unique levels, ability to morph, different rangers, etc. What are some other examples? ITT we discuss retro games set in the future and, optionally, assess the accuracy of their predictions

Chun Li is is an interpol agent, and uses limited ki power, so she's skilled....however, Sonya also being a special agent but seems like she's more of a leading front line soldier and is military not just investigative police, and she's way more serious and intense, and has "sonic ring" attacks that aren't really explained if it's tech or ki, but they are more competant than Chuns ki ball, so I think Sonya wins there, Mai is the wildcard here because while she's the least disciplined of the three and isn't a professional, she does have the most acrobatic skill and has the most power as she has all kinds of wild pyromancy abilities probably from magic Post games nobody on here or on youtube has ever played >Newly scanned from [the Video Game History Foundation]: An ad from the trade magazine Videogame Advisor (November 1995), which has Sega vainly telling retailers not to support PlayStation, right after the PS1 famously undercut the Sega Saturn Your enjoyment and opinion of this game forms entirely from if you see it as the send off to the Classic series or not.
Mega Man & Bass is the equivalent of an anime OVA set after the main series
I really like Tactics Advance on GBA. maybe a bit too much at this point? Cool, cute graphics, customization, challenge run options, etc etc. On my latest playthrough I've had some strange occurrences, not saying it's creepypasta game cart possession type shit, more like i've been hypnotizing myself by playing it too much.
in this game there's a moogle job called juggler, who has an ability smile, which moves the target unit to the top of the turn order. with two jugglers, you can smile indefinitely, chaining their turns to move them both across the entire map without anyone else getting a turn. when i realized, on my last playthrough, that this makes things a little too easy, i started imposing some challenges, like, the moogles can only juggle each other after one of them gets a kill. the logic for this was that the object they toss is a moogle's head - i figured they need to decapitate the enemy to have a head to toss back and forth. just a weird little roleplay challenge i imposed to de-trivialize a game i had trivialized.
well frankly this was just the beginning. in this game you can repeat self-targeting actions to grind exp. I wanted to create a bunny girl assassin harem, because in Final Fantasy i always love having the silly moogle character surrounded by the hotties (think FFvi) - when I got to the point that i had two assassins and a sniper in my party, what i started doing was petrify an enemy viera, gather the assassins around her, and have them conceal in place, as though it's some kind of ritual death dance. then i would have the elementalist cast a healing AoE on the statue in the center, and the healing effect would cancel the concealment, "revealing" the hidden whirling assassins. only then would i consider the mission complete, and slay the final enemy. What are some other games which emphasize the melancholic nature of sleep? This was pretty fun, though I don’t know why my “fire-blocking shield” couldn’t block his fireballs. Thankfully they put a fairy room earlier in the dungeon. Recently finished Tengai Makyo II. Game lasts longer than some modern ass jarpigs today. Also the music fuckin slaps. Crazy this shit came out in 1992.
Any of you finished this one as well? What happened to him in X series?
weird how Light and Willy kept getting referenced in X games but not the original MM Why doesn't he reward you with the wallet if you break the curse on day 2 instead of day 1? These special stages are truly awful. You could argue that it’s a noob filter, especially when playing Sonic+Tails, but this is like my 50th playthrough (first time on the 3DS version) and desu these have never stopped being shit. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BjOA6bpgMtc&t=15m10s
>A Megadrive version of Phantasy Star 1 is being made
Did the AI translation get that right? Anyone ever heard about this?
I find Konami to be quite a peculiar company among the other japanese retro giants like Capcom and Squaresoft. During the mid 90s and 2000s, to me it looked like Konami was really trying to chase a lot of trends.
Capcom made survival horror popular and maisntream with Resident Evil so Konami made Silent Hill.
Squaresoft's RPGs were gaining world wide popularity so Konami started Suikoden
Namco's Ace combat? Konami's Air Force Delta.
Virtua cop, Time Crisis and House of the dead? Check out Silent Scope
Simulation Racing games are big due to Gran Turismo? Here's Konami's Enthusia
Action games are the new hotness kickstarted by Devil May Cry? Let's turn Castlevania into that
It looked like Konami was continuosly trying to follow the trends from the competition but never really achieving the same success as their muses. (Sorry silent hill fans)
But Konami also was at the vanguard in some genres too, with Metal Gear and stuffs like DDR but to me it looked like Konami was not capable or handling their successes, it is difficult to explain.
Anyway, what are your favorite Konami games? world is objectively superior to 3 because you can replay any level you want in the game, including the castles, and youre not stuck on whatever current world you've reached(minus the tower of babel level transition. world 7? 4?) and can revisit any area on the world map should you want to farm lives or ban a feather/flower/yoshi
3 is still at the very least a 9/10 though I absolutely loathe anything touch screen related HOWEVER is there any worthwhile old game on Android? This was one of those games that felt like it was designed to sell strategy guides. Giant labyrinth with no map, exploration that hinges on finding fake walls/blocks, obnoxious password system, only certain characters can progress through certain areas and there's no clear indication of which you're supposed to use, etc...
The actual gameplay is pretty fun though. And the soundtrack is kino. How's the writing in the japonais version? Ed Annunziata announced that he, along with original team, will be making Ecco 1&2 remasters and possibly a new third game.
https://www.gematsu.com/2025/05/ecco-the-dolphin-and-ecco-the-tides-of-time-remasters-announced-alongside-third-ecco-game
Official website has a countdown timer to April 2026 (roughly 355 days). http://www.eccothedolphin.com
Can they make it? Can they bring our boy back and not repeat their predecessors' mistakes? What do you think about original games? What the fuck was his problem!? Played this again tonight for the first time since about 2006. Man, what a game. >fill game with well-hidden secret bonus areas
>indicate when you've found all secret bonuses in a level
>bonus rooms aren't even fun, they're either lame barrel segments, bouncy tire bits, or a fucking slot machine
>said secrets reward you with... extra lives or tokens which can help you get extra lives
>extra lives which, if you're good enough and dedicated enough to hunt down all the secret rooms, you probably don't even need
>no real reward for finding all of them
How did they fuck up this badly? They clearly realized they made a booboo, because DKC2 and DKC3 do an excellent job of rewarding the player for hunting down secrets (though 3 dropped the ball a bit with those retarded Simon Says bits) how the fuck do i beat this guy? i'm getting 1 shot with most of his attacks and even when i don't, i run out of healing items. am i too low level? Universally panned games that you honestly enjoy
Hard Mode: No meme picks that are on every "Top 10 worst video games ever!" list like E.T., Superman64, or Big Rigs. The bikini pics from doa2 Sonic the Hedgehog and Baku Baku Animal are intricately linked within a shared universe, possibly hidden within Sega's vast lore. The desert setting in Baku Baku hints at a deeper connection, especially considering the missing desert level from Sonic CD, which many fans theorize was deliberately omitted to conceal its significance. The fact that Baku Baku is set in "The Kingdom," yet shares visual cues like palm trees and desert landscapes with Sonic's worlds, fuels speculation that "The Kingdom" might be an alternate or hidden realm within Sonic's universe, maybe an unacknowledged dimension or a future dystopian version. Also Yuji Naka's reported statement about preferring to die in a desert rather than return to STI suggests a personal connection to desert-themed environments, possibly as an allegory for a secret project or a hidden narrative tying these worlds together.
Thoughts? This was always one of the most "taboo" topics at Sonic forums back in the day for some reason. Anyone played it? Should I give it a try? Is Outbreak worth playing for single player? it was so lame that we didn't see Orochi in KOF 97 actually reincarnated, but used a host body, and to this day SNK never showed him. PSA: The newest build of ShaderGlass is now on steam and receiving automatic updates and 100% supporting local retroarch libraries including bezels since last week.

Discuss early Windows games here. Anything released in the Window 3.x and early Windows 9x era (so circa 1991-1997) is game. Talk about your favorites, the games that came pre-installed on your PC or school computers, tips on getting games to run, and whatever else. The Japanese video game preservation society is out of money. The project, in which a white person in Japan buys rare Japanese video games and magazines with donation money and keeps them in a warehouse which only he and his friends are allowed access to, will close by September if they aren't given more money. Since they have a policy of not making ROM dumps of any games or scanning any magazines it's anyone's guess what will happen to the collected material.
https://www.timeextension.com/features/we-might-be-about-to-lose-a-powerful-force-in-the-world-of-video-game-preservation both better than any dbz game What was the first game to introduce this isometric world graphic style? Pic highly related. >I'm so hungry, I'd eat the ass end of a minstrel skunk!
Anyway, time for a Redneck Rampage thread is this worth a try if I didnt especially care for paper 64? It certainly wasnt BAD, but I didnt like it as much as smrpg or superstar saga. also mario rpg thread cool little game, but it required the Power Pad so not many people played it Soooo finally beat this game
the FUCK was that anticlimatic end?? GTA starts at San Andreas A reason I could never take this console seriously is because wherever you look they say FF7 is by far its best game and I played FF7 on PC and it's a childish anime story with time wasting random encounters and no real fun gameplay
I had a PS1 but it was mostly my Metal Gear and WWE machine It's a good game. Better than 8 and arguably 7 even. It's only disliked by people that are bad at MM, if they could cheese it with E-tanks 99% of complaints would disappear. What is your favorite Hyper/Special move in any fighting game? Haven't seen one of these in a little while.
What are you working on, /vr/? When playing the Sega Genesis, I did not feel I was interacting with a children's toy, I felt I was interacting with a cultural milestone, something like a revolution in form of gaming device. Seeing the logo to this day sends chills up my nutbag, RIP Sega, truly they wanted to be the most epic badass thing and though they failed in the end, really I only care about my childhood memories because I don't give a shit about new games Long time no see!
This is the thread for discussion of visual novels, date sims and eroge games released before 2007-ish
What are you playing recently? any new translation patches? is there a reason for why all the belmonts walk like this? What's /vr/'s opinion on FF9? Still better than X1 and you cant change my mind >game ends with a 26 door teleporter maze before a borderline impossible final boss unless you know an attack mysteriously doesn't hurt if you stand at just the right spot
Went from solid 7/10 to 5/10 at best real fast. Which translation of Final Fantasy 6 is the best / your favourite? They put Metal Gear on the Sega Genesis!
https://h0ffman.itch.io/metal-gear-md
I'm trying it right now. It's ported from the Amiiger. It's kinda a silly question but do I need to max summoning skill in this game? In my opinion, summoned creatures are not very useful. Most Wanted 2005 is pretty fun! What retro racing game are (You) playing? Ocean aka the gods of licensed movie slop made by taking a single engine and putting different assets in it to make 20 different games. This particular license is one that seems to be almost forgotten now. So I've been replaying the original Mother game after many many years.
It's a very sweet, if short, RPG.
I'm about to finish it with Teddy on the party for the first time. Wish there was a glitchless way to do it with Pippi too.
Anyone ever attempted a Pollyanna run? Dang, they don't make installers like they used to.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cioyLQ2O6yc I had no idea the Game Boy Color had pseudo-3D games like this. I had Driv3r on GBA and thought that was already pushing the hardware Why are retro games more fun than (most) modern games? >the only Mega Man arcade series Capcom ever made was a fighter instead of a run-and-gun
How do you fuck up this bad? One of the least-discussed KoF games, I don't think I've seen anyone talking about it besides the artwork of the female characters. Was the Xbox port of Morrowind a good version of the game? I have this weird problem where in other similar games like Sin and Punishment or Panzer Dragoon I don't mind memorising enemy layouts, patterns, paths and strategies but in a pure shmup like Touhou, Raycrisis or Dodonpachi I find it really boring
What's going on here? >Ulukai! Bring me the seven golden ass scratchers from Dashoram! I cannot scratch my ass unless I have all seven! Do this or be reverted for this trespass against the Yods! Terminal or GUI, what are your favorite classic Unix games? I like sail myself. And rogue of course. Why do so many top down shooters only let you shoot in the direction you're facing when Robotron 2064 had existed for years? Was this game really developed by Konami? It fucking sucks, doesn't even feel japanese, more like some tedious, unfun western jank with horrible game feel. I remember when this roster was so huge and left me in awe everytime Discuss the best puzzle game What was your favorite virtual museum game from back in the day? Garage sale season has been going on for about 2 months now, have any of you anons found any interesting retro games or consoles? How essential is rumble to you?
I remember skipping out on the wavebird back in the day after hearing that it had no rumble support Pachio-kun, the beloved Japanese vidya icon the West has never heard of. Well, not really. He didn't need 19 games on four different systems, he really really didn't. And then after one final PS1 release Coconuts put him out of his misery. Few tears were shed. so is Diddy considered some freakish evolutionary throwback by all the other apes or what Codename 47 is unironically Zelda 1-tier bullshit.
>tourist attraction
