Board: /vr/
"/vr/ - Retro Games" is 4chan's imageboard for discussing retro console video games and classic arcade games.
This board is for the discussion of classic, or "retro" games, including consoles, computer games, arcade games (including pinball) and any other forms of video games. Retro gaming means platforms launched in 2001 and earlier, and official game titles for those platforms released no later than December 2007 (homebrew console games made after this date will be permitted). The Microsoft Xbox, Nintendo GameCube, Nintendo Game Boy Advance, and Sony PlayStation 2 will now be considered "retro".

https://pastebin.com/M07tVfza I'm playing through all the doom games, I still have doom 3 and doom 64 to go. I know the bfg version of doom 3 is worse for some reason, but the actual game seems divisive. I've been told to skip it, or that it's the worst game in the series by several people. What do you guys think of it? Post OSTs where every single track is a banger.
If you have literally any doubts at all, don't post. Why does Link become an oni after helping/saving everyone? The devs said there’s a cultural reason for it but they couldn’t be arsed to explain it to Western insects. So much has changed in the short time you were gone.
Saturn Doom is now good.
Princess Crown translation is out.
Sakura Taisen 2 translation is out. Decided to play Okami to see what the hype was about. Holy shit it really was a good game. Apart from some slow progress in the story it was extremely inventive and pretty
>A precursor to Microprose's Colonization, EA's Seven Cities of Gold puts the player in the role of a Spanish conquistador who conquers the New World either forcibly or peacefully. It was the biggest selling game developed by Ozark Softscape coder Dan Bunten, most famously known for developing M.U.L.E. The scale of the game was huge for the time and includes sailing all the way across the Atlantic from home base in Spain (in order to save his progress, the player must re-cross the ocean and return to Spain). Another novel feature was the ability to generate a random world map instead of the default map of the New World--this necessitated a map disk and the RNG map could take several minutes to generate. While overburdening the player with options was a common fault with strategy titles both in 1984 and today, Bunten kept the gameplay simple by only including four main commodities--men, gold, trade goods, and food.
>The original version of Seven Cities of Gold was developed for the Atari 8-bit computers but as was standard practice of the day, EA had it ported to everything else--Apple II, Commodore 64, IBM PC, Amiga, Atari ST, and Macintosh but the ports were cut down and missing various features with only the Atari original being the "full" game. what were you guys playing the past two weeks Was it actually possible to 'beat' the original Tamagotchi, or did it just keep going until the battery died? US West: https://clovr.xyz/
CA/US Midwest: https://macgu.fun/ I just got the airship. how close am I to finishing the game brehs? I've enjoyed it a lot so far but really my only issue is slow battle transitions and there's a lack of new equipment in disc 3 until I do side quests I missed you so much /vr/, I'm so happy this place is back. There's no other place quite like it, there are no other user quite like you guys. All of you made this board so much fun, from passionate anons to shitposters.
What games did you play during the 4chan outage? did you beat any games?
Where did you go to discuss retro games?
Did you missed /vr/?
I played Sly Cooper 1 and 100% it, started Sly 2, and Ace Combat 04 shattered skies.
As for other places, I tried the sister site but it's just not the same. Free Thief Gold key for GOG: 894T161A91E8E645F8
also friendly reminder that if you have amazon prime, you get a bunch gog keys every few months. Do you guys think a ghost writer worked on it since Nintendo never revisited the setting again and toned down everything after it? Even though it was and still the most popular alongside OoT. >30 yrs and these are still the greatest jrpgs to ever grace mankind Are the Lunar games worth getting into? Did they really look at this title screen graphic and think "yeah, no problems here, looks perfect" What is the hardest, commercially released video game ever made? Obviously game skill is subjective, some will be better at certain games than others. But surely there is one game that is statistically harder than any other.
Some games, like pic rel, are still insanely difficult even with unlimited continues. Would a game like Battletoads be of similar caliber if it had unlimited continues?
Since games like Wizardry 4 and Nethack can be somewhat easily completed using a guide, let's have three categories.
>Hardest game that to complete with no guide or prior knowledge of the game whatsoever
>Games that you can use any guides or knowledge bases, but are still extremely hard
>Games that, even if every game had infinite life/continues, would still be extremely difficult. >god-tier logo
>shit-tier games
What went wrong? I know he and Teller did a number of them. And he did voice acting. But were any of the games good? How common were muscular females back during the retro gaming era? >game about apes collecting bananas has a skeleton wall texture What retro vidya did you play during the outage? I know the old Dreamcast stick is cool, but what other Retro/Modern Arcade sticks do you use for fighting games or shmups? it's not that good.
4 looks and plays better. having no diagonal and freewhip attacks feels like a downgrade. i will say the bosses are more challenging at least.
music i could go either way. Just beat this crock of shit without a guide and thought it was terrible. Does anyone here actually like Castlevania 2? If so, could you explain why? They shoulda kept the Japanese title and its Deep Purple reference instead of what happened here which was probably Howard Philips deciding that the kids would dig surfer lingo. Other than that it's an ok racer from back when Square still didn't quite know who they were as a company. I'm not gonna lie, I never liked SpongeBob. Even as a kid, I thought it was vastly inferior to Ren and Stimpy and Rocko, as well as the stuff on Cartoon Network like DBZ and Dexter's Lab, so when I heard this game was great, I decided to try it, figuring I could enjoy it without being a SpongeBob fan and it just felt like a meh Mario 64/Banjo-Kazooie type game. I wasn't a fan of its mechanics Port of a 1985 Taito arcade game. Beat up ninjas, rescue a princess, (who most likely doesn't reward you with sex for your troubles anyway) blah blah blah. Also ported by the semi-notorious TOSE so beware. Are there any Game Gear to Master System conversions that aren't complete shit? Fantasy Zone Gear for example is by far one of the laziest ports I've ever seen, the draw distance wasn't expanded so it's just the main game with garbage boarders.

https://newsroom.intel.com/corporate/intel-partner-deal-news-april2025 Is the "boss hanging from the ceiling thing" that's in D2 and Resident Evil 4 from something else? Like a popular anime or something? Or did one just copy the other?

https://youtu.be/ey5lUlDa9bk?t=150 Post stuff that you can only see if you lose. Three reasons why I enjoying exploring 3D environments from the 90's (and very early 00's)
1) The level design. There tends to be a middle ground between realism and made-up design that is based around fun and gameplay mechanics. Even if the levels are based on realistic real life locations, the level designers weren't afraid to throw wild unrealistic design in there because gameplay comes first.
2) The graphics. Working with the limitations, low-res textures, getting the most out of few polygons, dynamic lights, combined with technical feats and tricks. It creates a pleasant whole unique of the time period.
3) The sense of freedom and awe, discovering what's around the corners, finding secret places, climbing a high area only to be able to look at the level all around.
Pic related, a sample of PSX games with enjoyable 3D environments to explore, some with their own strengths and weaknesses. Was it really that bad, or did it only seem bad compared to the amazing first game? Not a very good game
there is not enough health packs and enemies are sponges It's been a while.
>Shmup you're playing currently
>Shmup you're hoping to play soon
>Any recent achievements you know want to brag about
Come out from the shadows, shmupfags. Trying to make a modded ps2. I'm going for 1tb of space on a ps2 fat (It's 13 years old, and has a probblem with scratching discs, hence why im trying to play off the harddrive instead. Should I get a slim instead?) I'm planning on streaming a bunch of ps2 games. There's youtube tutorials but I figured you guys would have better insight. I've used FreeMcBoot before so I'm not inexperienced in PS2 modding. I just want pro tips I’ve been having fun playing Majora’s Mask this past month. Yes the poor PC-man's Mario Kart. Less weapons/items to use, and had jump and handbrake-leftturn buttons. All the animal characters work the same.
Did anyone really get used to the controls? I recently played Mario Kart at a janky arcade, which seems to use recycled 3rd-party parts, which made me think that an acceleration pedal would make Wacky Wheels less annoying to play. In theory it should play well using a joystick with some customisable buttons, like a racing mecha game. I however tried it with a joypad and never got used to it. It seems that my muscle memory is too used to the default keyboard controls, even though i should react faster with the buttons all close by, on a joypad. Post-resurrection edition First of all, where do you even find them IRL, brothels? Second, how do you even "enjoy" them? They only give you a few seconds of sexy content between levels! I like what this game is going for, a lot. The more unconventional approach to systems, large swath of mechanics and side content. Truly I think the biggest issue with it is there's too much. If you want to engage with the game fully, experiencing all it has to offer, you're looking at periods of grinding, and many a card battle, often. Felt so start/stop. It's easy to say you can ignore it, but you're also really missing out if you don't engage with any of that stuff. The 3rd fight with Nightmare is so fucking bad that it almost ruins the game And so the Bases Loaded series comes to an end after the fourth installment--actually there were five of them in Japan but we didn't get the third one so BL3-4 are the fourth and fifth ones over there. It's regarded as significant for being the first baseball vidya with a Nippon League Player's Association license so they could use actual player names. The sfx are also a lot cooler in the Famicom version due to Jaleco's speech synthesis chip.
This is also a slightly uncommon cart due to its 1993 release date. Not rare just a little less common than the super-abundant BL1-3. In honor of 4chin's glorious return, we will once again discuss the greatest first person shooter ever made... Halo: Combat Evolved. Can you beat Super Mario Bros. in the arcade? Anyway, it's time for Rolling Ronny. Which Retro Game should I play? >non vidya company
>leaves veteran vidya companies in shambles
>sega never recovers
>nintendo only survives because of money and by ultimately taking a different approach to consoles to which they've stuck to this day
>gives microsoft the cue to eventually enter the console market as well
>calls dibs on the most universal controller design so that all competitors have to make slightly different/gimmick controllers
>robs nintendo out of all the big name devs and franchises
Was the creation of the PlayStation the greatest chad move in gaming history? You are Big Pussy Bompansaro's son. You are tasked with becomming associate. To complete this task You must punch drunks, manhunt style kill drunks with the occasional 6th gen titty. In this olive on white crime simulator you can ride the road to respect. You think your dad went state's witness and fled, though you also see your dad's ghost in the water. Work your way up the mob ladder by getting take out orders from super straight vito at the bing. It's das beste because the power armor upgrades aren't crytpic as shit, and because there are no gimmicks stopping you from playing in any order you want or forcing you to derail your main quest
MM games only suffer when made more complex, and it is for this reason I do not love the beloved MMZ series We are so back
Did you play any /vr/ approved games while we were gone? I'm so nostalgic for FMV games despite not liking them at all back in the day. how can a series that has been going on for so long peak so soon and NEVER match it? Why didn't they start the level with this view? did you even know the moon is visible in the level? If Negcons are so good, why were they abandoned by Namco after the original Playstation generation? hey /vr/, i’ve been wondering if breath of the wild is the spiritual remake of the original nes zelda.
do you guys get the same spirit and sense of discovery from both games?
or am i just tripping?
share your thoughts on whether botw really channels link’s first adventure. What's the longest you left your game paused so you wouldn't lose your save?
I used to regularly play duck tales before school and leave it paused all day and carry on playing when I got home. This game fucking sucks and it's impossible. I love it. What am I in for? Is this fair or am I about to get my shit pushed in? One thing that I love about Perfect Dark is that it released in the era of big tits and edginess, but the main character has the most kawaii voice ever
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=plb4TeMDy-A&t=1250s Now that we're back, recommend me some CRPGs from the 80s and early 90s (NOTE: EARLY, not late, so no picrel). Not Ultima or Wasteland, I've already tried those and I'm not impressed Is the original XBOX lowkey the best /vr/ investment?
>can be modded to do a ton and play a ton including playing old XBL games online
>games dirt cheap and run better than the other gen 6 consoles
>modern controllers much better than the originals exist
>tons of great exclusives like the halo games, Outrun 2, Otogi, Itagaki era Team Ninja games etc
>can use 360 component cables after slight mods at dirt cheap prices
>UI full of sovl
Why don't "retro gamers" like this beast? It's 2003, which are you buying? Anyone else here play PQ? It's an old zero player game from 2002, considered the first idle game. Picrel is pretty much the whole game Fucking master piece of horror What are /vr/'s preferred GM/GS soundfonts for late 90s midi? 4chan's back. Let's celebrate with a retro ads thread. Been wanting to play this gem for the first time. I thought I'd ask though, is the remake any better? Or are they similar in quality? Which /vr/ game is the most representative of each genre? Not necessarily the best but just the purest distillation >Rose eatin'

Doesn’t have the momentum of Sonic or DK

Doesn’t have interesting action commitment like Castlevania
Doesn’t have the feel good creativity and soundtrack of Kirby

Woah The only thing different about the Saturn is that it's as easy to develop for as the PS1. The retarded early launch that causes some retailers not to stock it and $400 price still happen. Would it have managed to get good 3rd party support and sold well enough not to completely destroy Sega? What's your favorite Fatal Fury? When I ran through them all with my buddy I think I liked RB2 the best, liked the presentation and feel and the simplified lane system Massive brainlet filter, this game. Why does it have so few games? This thing was 3x faster than the Apple II, had the same color capability as the Amiga, and had a full wavetable synthesis chip built-in in fucking 1986, before PCs even got FM synthesis cards. It was the perfect game machine of the 80s, yet nobody made games for it and the only thing it was ever used for was running Apple II games in emulation mode. anyone know anything about this thing? I got it for £10 but I can't find any info online I'm trying to remember the names of two Japan only PS1 games I played through emulation a few years ago. One was a cartoonish 3D point and click with a kid with a backpack and big shoes in a fairy tail world. The other was a 1st person walking sim horror game where your car breaks down and you explore a mansion and pick up objects. Think like Echo Nights. Final Fantasy 10 is nothing without its soundtrack and its grid PREVIOUS THREAD: >>11661550

Relax, talk and play. Let's have a good thread. You didn't beat DUKE3D.EXE unless you played Penthouse Paradise did you ever buy strategy guides for games that didn't need them? Why does Nintendo get so much attention, even from people who aren’t really fans of their games? Their stuff always seems to get more love than Sony or Microsoft—whether it’s through Recompilation efforts, emulation, or bug fixes. I’m sure games on the PS1, OG Xbox, and PS2 could benefit from native ports with all the extras, but it feels like only Nintendo gets that kind of treatment. What’s the deal with that? >gigantic and aesthetic world (I admit that)
>literally nothing to do
>find secret cave
>here your "reward", 50 rupees bro
>find another secret cave
>here are your 5 bombs
>find secret door
>here are your 10 arrows
What a waste of potential. If it had more items and unique stuff, it could have been the greatest 2D game ever made. The world design is good, but the world is fucking empty. There is nothing to do except fight enemies and collect rupees like an autist. Who the hell wants to find a cool secret room and the reward is irrelevant shit like rupees and bombs, which would take you 5 minutes to grind regularly? It's 2002, which are you buying? i love falling to my death 25x in a row because i moved one pixel too far to the left. you're an inspiration to us all, Sierra.

target-earth.net/wiki/doku.php?id=blog:pc98_devtools why do these statues have cracks? since when are they there? Brutal and gory retro recommendations? This is just bad track design. And of course the bots just drive right through it. Why do Nintendrones hail this tech demo as a “classic”, again? Kojima cringe or Kojima kino? I'd like to get into morrowind, but I'm used to oblivion n skyrim. What are the essential mods I need? I'm not fond of collections but if there's a good one I'd give it a go. Let's talk shop I'm here all weekend. The dendy is a clone console but sort of had it’s distribution business and a model and acted in a semi-official way, did the dendy have any russian original games? What the fuck is this part? Ugh.
Devil May Cry 3 thread, I guess genesis/mega drive thread How come these assholes don't have any good arcade compilations? If you look at Namco, Capcom and SNK they have many compilations dedicated to keeping their games alive. What hurts most is that Sega keeps dumping their Genesis library onto everything but ignores their arcade heritage. I thought you said this was fun?
It's just dumbed down GTA for children ITT: Comfy retro sports games Saturn bros... now is our time to shine.
https://github.com/eadmaster/pcrown?tab=readme-ov-file This game is amazing fun on multiplayer, but damn the arcade mode is brutal yet I feel nobody talks about it when talking about hard arcade modes, I cannot get past like the third or fourth round with any of my good characters, and I've beaten SFA3 with ease, cheesed my way through most MKs, have gotten over on most KoF games, etc My mind was blown by this game in 1996, in retrospect it's a little flawed. Still beautiful (better looking than DKC in my opinion) and sounds great with those techno club tunes only the 90s can provide The amount of asinine design decisions in this game is unbelievable.
>can't exploit enemy weaknesses until you've levelled up your weapons enough, making the start of the game the hardest part
>upon game over you aren't restored to the usual 3 lives like in every other MM game, you either have to play with only one life from then on or load a previous save
>if you give up on a mission that makes it disappear altogether
>elemental attacks are permanently missable as well
>using cyber elves requires an obscene amount of crystals, you won't realistically be able to use more than one or two in a playthrough without massive grinding Is this game really as bad as people make it put to be? What are some egregious examples of terrible localization in retro games? My beloved silver GC finally gave up the ghost and stopped reading discs. I hooked it back up to replay Skies of Arcadia. It worked fine the first time. I played for an hour or so and turned in for the night. The next day, I booted it up and it can't read discs any more. I am sad. I have three other GCs I have acquired over the years and none can read discs either.
My question to you all is: What is the cheapest replacement disc reader and what is the best replacement? I'm not looking for an ODE. I still want to be able to use my discs. Why did the genre disappear? What made it so suddenly obsolete by the late 90s when for PC gaming it was only second in popularity behind FPS earlier that decade? Why didn't they just remove this level instead of canceling the whole game?
are they retarded? >Bomberman but it's named after a Van Halen song
Wut. um what was this guy called again? This game is beating my ass. I've got zero experience with Puyo Puyo and randomly decided I wanted to try it out, but even on the easiest difficulty I can only get to stage 7 or 8. It feels way harder than any other puzzle game I've played like Tetris, Panel de Pon, etc.
Do you like Puyo Puyo? Are you good at it? Surprisingly kickass Gameboy beat-em-up that unfortunately never got a non-Japanese release. /vr/ asses thread
