Board: /vr/

"/vr/ - Retro Games" is 4chan's imageboard for discussing retro console video games and classic arcade games.

PRESS START TO PLAY
1391831618569
This board is for the discussion of classic, or "retro" games, including consoles, computer games, arcade games (including pinball) and any other forms of video games. Retro gaming means platforms launched in 2001 and earlier, and official game titles for those platforms released no later than December 2007 (homebrew console games made after this date will be permitted). The Microsoft Xbox, Nintendo GameCube, Nintendo Game Boy Advance, and Sony PlayStation 2 will now be considered "retro".

As a kid I never figured out he went away when you threw the key and waited a bit, so every time Phanto appeared was maximum panic for my kid self!
Somehow I feel SMB2 has a sort of "behind the scenes" vibe, like how it has reflector carwheels, and how there's masks and stuff. The newly added backgrounds on the All Stars remake reassured this behind the scenes idea with the new backgrounds for some of the indoor areas.

Post retrogame ``````Common Knowledge''''''

>Miyamoto hated DKC and Yoshi Island's visual style was his direct response to the CGI graphics
>Iwata showed up at the last minute to the development of Pokemon GS and somehow compressed the game to half the size which made it possible to fit a whole other region into the game
>Raiden in MGS2 was Kojima's idea of what the audience looked like and a way to mock them (Apparently we were all rather handsome in his eyes) and people hated not playing as Solid Snake so much that the game sold billions

Daily reminder that if this was the N64's controller it would've sold twice as much as it did and Nintendo would've sold enough N64 units to keep Rare.
>The ZL and ZR buttons are behind the L and R buttons.
>Uses NES controller connectors (The Super NES needed to do the same thing).
>Built in rumble.
>While not Controller related; Making sure every cartridge game has built in storage, meaning no Memory Pak, in fact, no controller expansion pack period.

How was this even acceptable in those days? One of the few objectively good things modern gaming has done is actually addressing the needs of guys who struggle with color blindness.

Somebody please fucking explain how this and Parappa are supposed to work. I just beat Lammy on Mednafen, twice in a row, but I couldn't tell you how this shit is supposed to work.
I know they are infamous for having awful timing windows, but that can't be the only issue. I know you're also supposed to "freestyle" but that part also makes no sense. Rhythm games are my expertise, to boot. I have like a 16 nps on Stepmania and have 5 starred the guitar hero trilogy on expert with a regular controller, but I can't make sense of this.

Pre NES Thread Reborn VI

Previous thread: >>11852646
Rules of the thread are simple:
>You can only talk about games and systems made before the US release of the NES (1985). Everything before it from the CRT Amusement Device to stuff like Marble Madness and Kung Fu Master is cool here. Later and homebrew ports for Pre-NES games on Pre-NES systems are allowed (e.g. Jr. Pac-Man was released in arcades in 1983 but the 2600 port came out in 1986)
>That's it.
I'm currently holding a poll on 2600 games you'd recommend to newcomers. The results will be made into a little pastebin. If you'd like to contribute a vote or write in a game here's the link: https://strawpoll.com/XmZRQv2X3gd
What are your favorite obscure arcade titles from this era? Tube Panic and Cloak and Dagger are a couple of my favorites.

/vr/ Pokémon RBY Coordinated Playthrough - Week 1: Signup/Brock/Misty
D0VzzAUVsAEVeoX
Sign ups are underway, plus Brock/Misty!

HOW TO JOIN
1 - Start a playthrough (any version is fine).
2 - Follow level caps. Level 20 or lower currently.
3 - Keep the community updated on your progress. Pics now.
4 - Battle other players! We don't have to save it for tourneys. Post your battle results and teams in the thread. Trades are highly encouraged. Coordinate with others.
5 - Upload your saves. For physical carts, try using GBxcart or GB Operator to upload your save files. It's not required, but trading will be off the table.
6 - Share your ingame name, trainer ID, and an image of RBY trainer sprite you want and I can make graphics. Use this link as a reference. https://www.spriters-resource.com/game_boy_gbc/pokemonredblue/sheet/8729/

TOURNAMENT STRUCTURE
After the 4th Badge: First Single Elimination Tournament
After the 8th Badge: Second Single Elimination Tournament

HOW WILL THAT WORK?
Parsec allows two players to individually batlle and then post results. I will host a parsec session myself after both players give me their saves.
Battles will be conducted on Pokemon Stadium.
If your opponent doesn't show, after one rescheduling, it's counted as a loss for them, a win for you.
Showdown is the fallback if nothing else is doable.

BATTLE RULES
Level 50 All
Clauses: Sleep Clause, Freeze Clause, No Double Team

WHAT NEXT?
After 1 week, we'll set our sights on Surge. If anyone gets left behind, that's juat how it is. You'll need to catch up - Pokemon isn't too tough, and can be beat in a day or two.
If all players agree to advance to the next badge, we'll so so.

ANYTHING ELSE?
Have fun. Challenges will be posted shortly. Don't be afraid to post pictures. Yell at me if you want any of this to change. Hide the thread if you don't care. Suggest challenges!

Biggest memes/urban legends in retro games
large
What are some of the most persistent memes, falsehoods, or bullshit stories you hear about old video games?

For me, it's "piracy killing the Dreamcast meme"
>Sega had already fired 1/3rd of its workforce by 1999
>By 1995 they had so much unsold inventory of Genesis and Game Gear games they were having to waste money buying back
>This inventory buy-back and early Saturn launch soured relationship with retailers
>Sega was so in the shit, Bandai offered to buy them in 1997
>Sega also gets into a lawsuit with 3Dfx for an early design of the Dreamcast that 3dfx leaked to the public (sega paid out of court settlement)
>The CEO who spearheaded Dreamcast development, Bernie Stollar, is fired for selling the system at a money losing price ($200)
>The system's launch in Japan is a failure, mainly due to a chip shortage from NEC
>PS2 announced by March 1999, offeres built in DVD playback and back compat with all PS1 games
>In 2000, Sega had to pay settlements to employees for abusing them in Japan
>By Summer 2000, Sega still has millions of unsold systems in their warehouses
>coincidentally, in June 2000 is when the first games get cracked
>they aren't self-booting
>this at a time when most are still using dail-up
>not even half of the library is available to download
>most of the rips are shitty
>games that the 1 gig GDROM capacity have to remove assets to fit on a CD
>yet somehow, "piracy is what killed the Dreamcast" in January 2001 after they've spent years losing money on Saturn, pissing off retailers, paying legal fees, and firing staff
How does anyone still believe this meme? Are they retarded to all the shit Sega had going on even before Dreamcast launched in 1998? Do they not understand how stupid it is for a company to leave the HARDWARE business when they were dealing with SOFTWARE piracy?

These aren't very good are they? Every batch I've purchased needed the cog holes expanded, the range is subpar and the entire internet is telling me "bro it's as good as an almost perfect stick" What? I've had better experience with floppier old sticks than these. Every time I test with mimi controller test they yield extremely weak results. Best I can say about them is they seem to retain the granularity that the garbage chinese drop ins don't.

Anyway, what are you fixing lately?

Hated this on release, but replaying it now….
IMG_9043
I was in college when this came out, and wow was I excited for another open world Metroid romp of figuring out where to go and finding secrets.

Except that’s not what this was - at ALL. And damn was I seething about it. I beat the game, angry the whole time, listening to that stupid fucking AI lead me around by the leash, and instead of appreciating what the game *was* all I could see were the things it weren’t.

Well I’m replaying it again now and trying to keep an open mind. (Replaying it on a sickkkk modded indigo purple classic GBA with backlit screen; so amazing; anyway….).

The game is fantastic, if you don’t view it under the lens of being the sequel to Super Metroid. It’s got diverse areas, just enough side exploration to let you find optional upgrades, a TON of secrets you can *eventually* come back for near the end, and a challenging difficulty curve that actually rewards the optional upgrades you find. Plus the game actually was doing sci fi horror back when the genre really hadn’t solidified yet. We didn’t realize what we were playing, but this was the seed that grew into things like Dead Space one day.

Anyway, it’s a great game… dot dot dot…. So long as you aren’t expecting Super Metroid 2.

Anyone else have this problem?

You’re interested in retro games because they are more pleasant and warm/cozy by association and the history of gaming is fascinating. But when it comes to actually playing retro games, with the exception of a handful of undisputed greatest titles, you can’t play them for more than 10 minutes because most hasn't aged well. But you still like reading and hearing about it a lot

Castlevania
Bloodlines
It feels like the difficulty shift from Classic to Metroidvania is understated. I mean, everyone knows that they're harder games, no question about it, but I don't think enough people talk about how the exact way the old games were difficult helped sell the experience. All the crazy patterns and pickups hidden around the levels, it really made it feel like you had to exploit everything to win as a lone dude against the insurmountable legions of evil, and the vast majority of this exploitation is intended instead of any form of cheesing.

I think Bloodlines did it best too. You get the refinements of the 16-bit era, and stuff like the fake blocks are slightly more visible without always being eyecatching, but when you're playing as Morris, the game still comes down to just being a dude with a whip, no fancy 8-way snapping or item crashes and backflips neither.

I think Seiken Densetsu 3 (also known as Trials of Mana) has the best pixel art for a 2D top-down game and is one of the best-looking SNES game.
There might be 2D games that look better with side-scrolling graphics or such, but I think when it comes to top-down, SD3 is the best.

SH2 revisited
1444455538199
I have a soft spot for Sh2, but there's a reason it didn't click with gamers right away and took years to build a following, and it's mostly the early game:

>intro, walk through park, first enemy tutorial
>first weapon: the pank is extremely underwhelming and not fun to use
>have little direction for the city section and easy to get lost
>get to the apartments and it seems like more aimless wandering
>have to go to specific rooms in the right order to get the gun and flashlight (essential to start really "playing' the game)
>very easy to get lost in the apartments or miss one item or not understand some obtuse puzzle
>city scape again part 2
>meet some goofballs

I think the game doesn't really start to roll until you meet maria, and get into the Brookhaven hospital which is more interesting than the apartments.

It just takes too long and is too much effort for the game to actually get going. The Hospital, historical society, prison, abyss, motel, are all really solid. So whether someone likes the game is likely: did they get past the apartments?

Pacing better might have made more sense to follow 1's format: dream fantasy segment, meet the heroine, she gives you a gun and you find a knife, and a flashlight, so you start playing immediately. In SH1, you get all the essential items within 5 minutes, but it's 15-30 for SH2.

Sh3 went in the opposite direction: nothing BUT action.

Settle a debate /vr/. Should the most reasonable definition of 'boomer shooter' include the very first generation of true 3D shooters too, or should the cutoff be the pseudo 3D '2.5D' engine games, doom, build etc?

Animal_Crossing_Coverart
What about the gamecube Animal Crossing makes it so much better than the later iterations? I just can't seem to get into any of the later entries other than Wild World. Everything about the first one just keeps drawing me in and makes me play the game in either short bursts or long sessions and both of them feel productive and fun. I fire up New Leaf or New Horizons and I just can't get into it at all despite it just objectively having more gameplay elements and more customization and furniture options

The original game's combat benefitted from its limited mobility by making you have to consider what the best weapon for the job was. It made each encounter feel almost like a puzzle. In every game after you just spam strafe jump and use whatever. It made combat mindless. Strafing ruined this series.

/CRT/ Thread: Dead General Edition

Previous thread: >>11820754

>Try to keep things /vr/ related: Focus should be on 6th Gen Consoles and older. Slight off topic is fine so long as it's related to CRTs, such as later 16:9 models, HD models, etc. Systems with backwards compatibility are also safe territory, as are re-releases on newer hardware. PC CRTs are also welcome and appreciated.
>Produce OC! Bust out your camera and take photos of your CRTs displaying all sorts of games, featuring all sorts of tubes, using all sorts of signals. Getting good shots can be hard, but if you take enough, at least a few will turn out alright.
>Try and give as much information as possible when asking for info on a specific set, or troubleshooting an issue to expedite and help you may receive. As always, Google is your friend and we are your friends with benefits. Do people read this? Older archived threads aren't a bad place to look either; Seriously, there's literally 6 years of backlog at this point.
>Share appreciation for others choice of technology and personal philosophy of gaming. Always remember to show courtesy in your discussion and moderate yourselves first.

Limited discussion of video processing and scaling devices is alright, but remember to keep the focus on CRTs and CRT accessories.

Sonic The Hedgehog (Sega Genesis)
RPxxPN34_o
Sonic 1 was just a bad game. Sonic 2 just instantly felt so much smoother and so much easier to play, the level design was a billion times better, didn't have a ton of super cheap enemies to jump out of nowhere to get you.
Sonic 2 wasn't a bunch of hurry up & wait like the original, no underwater levels that make you have to wait for bubbles to pop up so Sonic can breathe again.
i think a lot of Sonic 1's flaws were the Sonic Team trying to figure out what they were doing, but i don't wanna blame them.
It's not Sonic Team's fault because they were under pressure and probably completely bogged down by Sega themselves because Sega had to compete against Mario.
the people in Sonic Team were decent people, but Sonic 1 the game itself sucks.
The only two things that made Sonic 1 memorable was the marketing and people liking the Green Hill Zone.

There's no such thing as a 6-button controller
1752443379377
(And, everybody maps their modern Sega pads wrong).
So, establishing common ground: consoles like the NES/PCE/etc (and most portable systems up to the GBA) have 2 face buttons, but a good chunk of their games use the Select button as a tertiary action in-game, so I think it's fair to say they were 3-button games/systems. The SMS really is the only true 2-button console AFAIK, since it didn't even have Select.
When the MD came about, its controller had 3 face buttons in a row but no Select - honestly a good trade. How games mapped these is what's interesting. It of course varied, but usually, it seems A and C would be both Confirm or straight up the same action, and B would be the secondary action/Cancel. If a game actually used all 3, then B and C would be the equivalent of the NES's B and A, while Sega's A is whatever Select would be on NES. The Power Base Converter even mapped the SMS's action buttons to B and C by default.
With the MD's "6-button pad", it really just existed for fighting game ports. Very few other games totally utilized it, and why would they - the XYZ buttons were so small and nubby!

I'm catching on the handful of Mega Man games I had never beaten and this is really good.
I'm coming off Rockman & Forte and EXE WS on Wonderswan which were both bad though so it benefits from the comparison

NGC Battle & Fighers was also okay, a couple of good fights. I don't remember if he was in the og Battle & Fighters games but seeing Napalm Nam drive around using his chains and using his shoulder pods was pretty cool. They really fucked him up in the NES MM5.

Majora's Mask
Majoras-Mask-1024x576[1]
I just beat Majora's Mask for the first time and I have to say, I loved it. I don't get a lot of the criticisms about it being an "expansion" of OoT or overly reusing assets, it definitely feels like a complete game with its own identity and even has plenty of new assets, new characters, new enemies, etc alongside the reused ones. This just may be my new favorite Zelda game and I really wish more games in the series took after it. From the abundance of sidequests and secrets to find in a densely populated world, to the much shorter and more satisfying dungeons that present a fun challenge but never overstay their welcomes (as so many Zelda dungeons often do), to the more intense combat with enemies and bosses that actually make you think about how to fight them and make you react quickly (Garo Master sticks out in my memory a lot in this regard).

Wind Waker and Twilight Princess added more combat abilities, but they never felt necessary because all the combat was made so much easier and the enemies so much slower and dumber. If they had actually built upon MM's more demanding, fast-paced combat and made more enemies that force you to use all the tools at your disposal they could have made something incredible. Maybe they thought it was just too hard, so they scaled it back in later games, but I loved it.

Was this the last time game consoles were unique?

>Dreamcast had the ability to perform what was called Order Independent Transparency. Dreamcast can output VGA natively
>PS2 is full of beautiful particle effects that wouldn't even come close to being surpassed until GPU particles went mainstream two generations later, and even then tanked with transparency effects the PS2 powered through at 60fps
>GameCube supports texture compression, has hardware support for a lot of different texture effects (via TEV shaders), has a decently large dedicated texture cache and actually has proper support for mipmaps / trilinear filtering
>Xbox had a high end PC-level GPU coupled with a low-tier Pentium III 733 CPU with a crippled cache. The system has Direct X 8.1, shader model 1.1, vertex shader 1.1 and two Vertex Shader units, while the Geforce 3's only had one

Chitei Senkuu Vazolder (Japan)-250713-131012
Just wanted to make a thread about one of my favorite of the lesser known NES games. It's Chitei Senkuu VAZOLDER
Also known as WURM: Journey to the Center of the Earth (Also a cool title)

It's about a cute girl named Moby who's in charge of the crew of a machine called VAZOLDER, who has to venture deep underground to find the missing crews of the other Vazolders who got lost earlier. Among them is her boyfriend too. In their quest they get involved in the secret war between two underground races.

It's got side scroller shooter sections, on-foot exploration, text adventure sections, first person sections, and lots of cutscenes. It was really a cinematic experience!

Im starting my file over again as i didnt realize you get no fucking ammo in this game and Im already screwed, i have nothing but my knife. am I supposed to just run past everything? use my knife? aim for headshots? why do some zombies respawn and others dont, is there a way to know? Maximo was a literal masterpiece.

I played the shit out of this game back in the day, and it’s wild how (even for someone who didn’t care for super challenging games) this inspired me to “git gud”. By the end I finished with all the kisses and even managed to finish that awful Master Level too.

That was nearly 25 years ago though and I think it’s time for a replay. I am fully expecting my old to get filtered, but I also am going to persevere and hopefully push through. I do remember hella grinding on 1-1 for extra lives and coins.

Sadly the sequel just wasn’t quite as inspired; something was off about it and it lost the amazing level design from the first one. And due to the series not selling well enough we never got the third one and never got to rescue the princess.

was this the absolute PEAK of gaming? basically if you had ANY system/pc that wasnt a shitturn (lol) you were drowning in timeless classics that would define entire genres for decades to come. not only that but every platform was so unique from each other which made the whole experience so much more fun. gen 6, NES era and early 90s was great too but for me this has to be the most golden of ages. theres so many other great ones I could list, even the saturn had a few.

Uncharted Waters: the errand boy experience
Screenshot_20250711-211203 (1)
Man been a while since i dropped a game, i saw in a thread about how New horizons is such a good game so i decided to try this one out and holy shit does it get old fast.

The beginning is harsh but completely manageable even if i lost some money buying fucking grapes or something, then when you get the hang of it (and with that i mean buy art once) you start making money and the game actually becomes pretty fun, exploring the world actually feels harsh and you really need to prepare for the worst to come, getting trough Asia the first time was a great time and i became rich after i got back to mainland.

After that tough? Now you are a errand boy for the king, need to track down some random Turkish fucks and worse of all battle them in that mild battle system that tries to be realistic but manages only to be no fun at all. And worse of all you have to do like 12 errands before you can see the ending after the good part is already over.

All that said, does new horizons fix the battle system? Is there more to it's endgame than running errands? I dropped this but i actually had a good amount of fun for the limited hours it was about sailing and not about fighting random pirates.

most people only really get into about 25% of Sonic 3’s soundtrack. The stuff in the main levels is okay, but the real gems are in the competition mode levels. That’s where the magic happens. Like Desert Palace, it’s got this tropical, Shibuya-kei vibe, all syncopated and playful. The chords are lush but melancholic, kind of like a daydream that’s both bright and wistful at the same time. It’s one of those tracks that hits you emotionally without trying too hard.
Then there’s Balloon Park. And wow, compare that to Carnival Night Zone, it’s like night and day. Carnival Night’s track is just a mess, with that compressed audio and a circus melody that’s all over the place, totally uninspired. Balloon Park, on the other hand, is a total masterpiece in terms of composition. It’s short, punchy, and insanely creative. It doesn’t overstay its welcome like those long, bloated tracks from bands like Coldplay. Instead, it’s sharp, fun, and always interesting. Think of it like Wire: tight, inventive, never boring. That’s how the music in these competition levels feels. fresh, energetic, and always keeping you hooked.
And then, there’s Azure Lake. Honestly, it’s a total sensory overload, a beautiful, sweeping masterpiece. The main synth melody is piercing and clear, almost thrusting out at you, but in a way that feels alive. It keeps that original J-pop vibe alive, a sound inherited from Masato Nakamura, father of Sonic’s music and the composer of Dreams Come True.
