that's because we just knew less people in general back then and didn't get exposed constantly to a bunch of niche algorithm induced trend echo chambers. i mean that was my experience as well b back then, only knew my dad and his cousin were kind of nostalgic about neo geo and amigas and shit while me and my brother played gameboy advance, gamecube, ps1, ps2, and eventually xbox 360. so we were playing the current stuff but my dad and his cousin could care less about it, whereas they'd be hype asf on tabletop RPGs or some castlevania or bionic commando as they grew up the in the dnd and arcade era and all the sort of subculture that came with that. there was probably a massive amount of people out there that were his age and nostalgic for the same shit even though we never knew them or interacted with them unless you'd go on a forum or game shop, now zoomers are hyper connected online so you never have to leave your bed when you can collectively engage in nostalgia porn with people on tiktok for an era that was before their time, add that to the fact all this stuff is so abundant and accessible now. you learn of a game from a tiktok and you can open a tab and buy everything related to that game you could ever want right away. previously it actually took some effort of leaving the house usually to go collect shit.
