Precisely; Marathon runners already enjoy running and anyone that only cares about the extrinsic motivation of being perceived as athletic is going to be miserable the entire time they're participating. People like that should learn to enjoy running before signing up for a marathon.

Seriously consider the implications of someone that commodifies their enjoyment of a game that is already supposed to be enjoyable. To me, that reads like someone that lacks an ability to appreciate their own achievements. As you're aware, it can even seem like they're forcing themselves to complete something they don't actually care about just for the sake of worthless social prestige, but I know you're not like that.
