They were always overrated. Doom was lightning in a bottle. It had Romero's love for dungeon crawlers and brutality, Carmack's obsession with an efficient 3D engine, Tom Hall's cool original lore, and Adrian Carmack's DnD and metal inspired monster design. I wouldn't say it's the best game of all time, far from it, but it has all the elements needed to give it a universal appeal.

Universal appeal was a rare thing for PC games. Most PC devs were hyperfocused on features they loved and made complex games out of them that could deter non-fans of the genre, and Doom was almost certain to go down that path, yet out of sheer luck it turned out to be what it is. They also had an earlier success with Wolfenstein 3D, so they had the resources other PC devs could only dream of.

Their games got progressively derivative afterwards as they lost their old passion and got torn apart by creative differences. That's the case with every video game studios, but ID was unique because while other studios grinded their way through several titles only to see a tiny fraction of Doom's success, Doom gave them an overnight sensation, so they fell from grace overnight too.
