You are mistaken. Sources on Genesis sales differ but 35-40mil are the common number while the SNES sold 49mil. The Genesis / Mega Drive slightly outsold the SNES in Europe, matched SNES sales in the Americas and heavily underperformed in Japan. The difference in sales can basically be attributed to the poor Japanese performance which flies in the face of the OP's point because they never got much Western Gems slop, they were mostly getting Japanese made games from Sega, Treasure, Konami, Technosoft and a bunch of arcade companies. Any best of list of Genesis tunes is 95% Japanese games not to mention the CD unit was popular there, 1 in 4 Mega Drive owners had it.
