From what I've seen, people on /vp/ don't actually play the games.
Far more often, the people discussing the perceived faults of Gen 1 and 2 are posting on Reddit or "Pokemon Twitter". And even then, I'm not entirely sure they're playing the games either, given the criticisms they have.

Those criticisms, I've noticed, seem to boil down to two main complaints:
>too easy and needs competitive rosters
>too difficult and needs to be more player-friendly
It's very strange to see either complaint, as someone who played the games as a child and found them fair yet reasonably challenging without prior knowledge.

But actually looking into and engaging with the people making these complaints, it's very often the kind of person you've alluded to; someone who refuses to play without consulting spreadsheets and power leveling to be on (what they believe to be) an even playing field with whatever upcoming boss they've already thoroughly researched. Which personally sounds like a miserable way to experience any game.
