From the point of view of someone who the late 80's Rad Racer is the better name. It's cool, the aliteration is fun, and it depicts the game well (the 3-D glasses being rad). Highway Star sounds super generic.
Also Rad Racer got a sequel, Highway Star didn't.

It's one of the best racers on NES, up there with Taito Grand Prix, Micro Machines, whichever RC Pro Am is your favourite, and F1 Sensation.

For one thing Square was betting on RPGs from the start through DOG. Secondly, they also released racers on PSX and PS2.
