I feel like you both got told by some eceleb that this was some 10/10 hidden gem liminal kino, and got buttblasted when it turned out to be some 7/10 game with problems

That's why I said "CLOSER to metroidvania", so that I wouldn't trigger local autists (I failed).
I just feel that the game was heavily trying to ape SotN, with one big map and long corridors of enemies, plus a levelling mechanic and elves sort of resembling items and summons. They probably realized this didn't really work and went back to standard 8 levels structure with no leveling per se.
At least compared to Z2-4, Z1 definitely is way closer to metroidvania of them all.
