For a first playthrough, I generally try to meet the game on its own terms.

For example, in the Super Robot Taisen game I'm playing, you are given a single in-game save state. You can load from it as many times as you want, whenever you want, which is extremely powerful. You can use it to undo deaths and force critical hits.
However, because you only have one, you have to be very careful when you overwrite it, as if you save in a losing position, you may need to restart the entire stage, and a single stage can easily be five hours long or more.
The game is built around the assumption that you'll use this save state. It has many difficult challenges which would be highly frustrating and unfair without it. There are a lot of sudden ambushes which could wipe out a player who didn't know about them without the safety net of the save state. There's also a whole bunch of story that plays only when you make a new save state and never appears anywhere else, including some great scenes.

So when I play that game, I do make use of the single in-game save state.
I do not, however, use save states when I play Fire Emblem.
Fire Emblem is an extremely similar game, and has many of the same issues that Super Robot Taisen does (ambushes, for example) which would be easily resolved by allowing myself the same single save state with the same rules.
However it seems hypocritical to me to want to change the rules of a game I've never even played, like a picky child who "doesn't like" food they've never eaten.
If I try the game, things I think will be flaws may become something I enjoy. I've been wrong many times before and I'll be wrong again, so I do my best to be as patient as I can.
Depending on my love for the game, that patience may be measured in years or minutes, but either way I always honestly try my upmost to enjoy the game as it is.

After I beat a game, no rules. I'll cheat like hell if I think it will be fun.
