It makes more sense when you realize it's a Devilman reference. Okay not that much sense, but a lot of SMT makes more sense when you realize there's a lot of Devilman references and fanfic in there, including the idea of demons fusing with one another. Though there it's either voluntary or one taking over the other.
One of the coolest aspects of megaten is some kind of forbidden meeting between technology and occultism, so someone making a process like this does show some new man-made innovation of using demons.

There's a lot of shit in SMT that's just "there, and never explained or talked about. Like Maybe I'm just too autistic, I think this is the appeal for a lot of people. Weird mysterious shit with little explanation, you just roll with it.

I don't remember if it's said in the Famicom or SNES games, I know it's said in IV(not retro), that demon fusion is a forbidden practice that a lot of people would describe as heresy and disgusting.
It varies on how demons view it themselves, some of them find it insulting and degrading to be used as fusion fodder, others like it and want to fuse with stronger demons and look forward to it.
