malaysia and singapoor both use this updated 1950s-2013 system.

and between taiwan and unfree HK, they used different trad characters between them. it's not really "traditional" or standardised. they too changed stuff in different ways. but no one remembers what changed. maybe only the language studies academia notes this shit down... and readdit scholars.

and like i said ,"context". check the signboards and art in public places of malaysia/singapoor. they still use "traditional" versions in some places.check out the signage for "Ngee Ann" at their schools and at that trendy red-tiled shopping mall built by Takashimayans. the "Ngee"/Yi/Loyalty character is very obviously "traditional". in terms of religious text/signage, i heard it was due to "more strokes= more luck" superstition or something.
the oldest form of "traditional" i've seen was "grass letters" in calligraphy, but no one can read the swiggly crap. they look like they were written by snakes on crack. as bad as doctor's handwritting.
