There's a little bit of that in Green Hills (probably why it wasn't the first zone) and Scrambled Egg (makes sense why it's the normal final zone while Crystal Egg is a breather) but it's definitely accentuated by Game Gear screen crunch. Aspect just wasn't as considerate as Ancient when they took over. Sonic Chaos had screen crunch issues such, such as the last ring that flies straight upwards would despawn when it shouldn't due to touching the screen's edge, but it's also a much easier game.
Sonic Triple Trouble, I'm convinced is a victim of this too. There's a lot of maze-like level design, especially in the second half of the game, to the point I've had the timer run out on me. It was initially announced to have a Master System version that would have released simultaneously with the Game Gear version in October 1994, then the Master System version got silently canceled and the Game Gear version delayed to the following month likely sometime after the Japanese release, Sonic & Tails 2. Then Sega magazines tried to play it off like, "oh don't worry, unlike the three previous games this one was built for Game Gear first instead of being ported from Master System.
...I think that was just a marketing lie and the game design was also intended for the bigger screen, possibly moreso than Sonic Chaos. There's a fanmade Master System port, and while it unfortunately suffers a little bit from Sonic Blast-itis where they couldn't make specialscreens properly fit the aspect ratio, the actual gameplay feels more natural. It's basically a proof-of-concept showing that a Master System version was more than feasible.
