Board: /vst/
"/vst/ - Video Games/Strategy" is 4chan's imageboard dedicated to the discussion of strategy video games.
/vst/ is a place to discuss all types of strategy video games, including both turn-based and real-time strategy, turn-based and real-time tactics, single-player and multi-player (including MOBAs). All platforms are welcome.
Does this mean discussion of strategy games is banned on other video game boards? No! /vst/ is just a separate board specifically focused on strategy games where discussions about your favorite games can thrive.
Please familiarize yourself with the rules and remember to use the spoiler function where appropriate! Rise of Radicalism is one of the mods of all time Steam Summer Sale thread: /vst/ edition I'm thinking of trying it because it's on sale, I was a big fan of Victoria 2 but always hated how it encouraged you to become a socialist/liberal democracy at the end of the game to maximize pop growth and the economy.
Looking over the artwork for Victoria 3 this game looks to be that but dialed up to 11. How bad is it? Is playing a reactionary absolute monarchy viable or are you bottlenecked until you enact the reforms the developers want you to take? exactly who is the audience for this?
Let's discuss the best Total War game of all time: Medieval II Total War
Released nearly 20 years ago M2TW continues to set the gold standard for real time tactical battles and strategy games.
While providing a complete experience in the base game and supplemented by 4 expansion campaigns the game truly shines because of the numerous high quality mods developed by the community in the years since release.
This thread provides an opportunity for the enjoyers of this magnificent achievement in strategy gaming to discuss their favorite aspects, favorite mods, share tips, tricks, comments, complaints, or simply post AARs for their current campaign
Some of my favorite mods:
>Stainless Steel
A truly vanilla+ experience. Highly recommenced for an improved medieval experience without changing the underlying gameplay too much
https://www.moddb.com/mods/stainless-steel/
>Divide and Conquer
Very high quality Lord of the Rings mod. An expansion of the original Third Age Mod DaC adds bugfixes, new units, new factions, and more detailed and impactful scripts
https://www.moddb.com/mods/divide-and-conquer/
>Europa Barbarorum 2
A very detailed, in depth, and historically accurate depiction of the ancient world beginning in the late 3rd century BC and featuring the wars of the Diadochi, The Punic Wars, and the fall of Pyrrus.
https://www.moddb.com/mods/europa-barbarorum-2
>Tsardoms
Focusing on the Balkan region this extremely detailed and high quality mod depicts the end of the medieval period and the beginning of the renaissance era with two seperate start dates, one in the 14th and another in the 15th century showcasing the rise of the Ottoman Empire, the fall of Constantinople, the start of the Italian Wars, and more.
https://www.moddb.com/mods/tsardoms-total-war
>Insularis Draco
A very focused and detailed mod which focuses on the fall of the roman empire and start of the dark ages in North Western Europe
https://www.moddb.com/mods/insularis-draco EU4 thread (also known as eu5 wating room).
The mandate of heaven edition. Trust the plan When the FUCK are they going to update Escann edition

>>2052553 Recently bought this on Gog having not played it since its release.
At the time I thought it was ok but was surprised how much I enjoyed playing it after all these years. Graphics aren't bad, gameplay is fun and the single player is neat and it captures the Warhammer Fantasy feel well. Also doesn't take forever to install unlike TWW3.
Any other MOC fans around? https://forum.paradoxplaza.com/forum/developer-diary/tinto-flavour-29-27th-of-june-2025-milan-naples.1809425/
Hello, and welcome one more Friday to Tinto Flavour, the happy days in which we take a look at the flavour content of Europa Universalis V!
Today, we will take a look at the flavour content for Milan & Naples! Besides being the respective leaders of the Ghibellines and Guelphs IOs, as we saw this Wednesday, they have their own country flavour, as being two of the most important Italian countries of the period. So let’s start without further ado: Talk about new mods, mods you're hyped for, etc.

What recipes are they going to fuck up now, like they did with field kitchen? Discuss the magnificent performance of Soulkey, who has won his fourth ASL in a row earlier today. Given that the meta is much more brutal now than it was in the KeSPA era, with less emphasis on economy and more on aggression, this is definitely the most impressive Zerg performance of all time.

Unfuck yourselves. What do you do when it's obvious you're losing? Do you still keep playing or start over? DO YOU HEAR THE VOICES TOO??? kind of underwhelming, the Unification mod already did almost everything the remaster claims to do. I guess we get an improved vanilla experience though >Big announcement you guise
>25 anniversary, lots of great new content for fans of older titles
:D
>interviews and shit nobody cares about

>back to the endless Warhammer slop Why is Rizia so much harder than Sordland in Suzerain?

>father was a cuck who gave a bunch of concessions to enemies within and without

They have 5 titles and hopefully another on the way. All games are full of vibrant art and detail, touches of love, and lots of content. They are challenging on the highest difficulties, but fair.
I wanted to get everyone's general opinion on the game, and just discuss mechanics in general, as well as gripe about things we find annoying or that we would like to see changed/added in future titles or updates.
Anyway - Kingdom Rush general - which of the 5 titles is your favorite, least favorite, and why? It's Starcraft but with actual strategy instead of reliance on APM and twitch muscle-memory movement.
Never seen an auto battler this deep, 1v1s are fun as hell. Why isn't there more finance and economy games? Tycoon games are just mindless builders. >OXCE?

Avaliable for free at https://www.bay12games.com/dwarves/
or as a paid premium version on Steam or Itch.io
>What is the difference?
Both are the same game on the same version (51.xx). The free version uses ASCII as a tileset (but you can mod other usermade tilesets and graphic packs)
With the premium version you pay for a premium tileset + premium OST + access to beta branches and steam integration (if on steam).
>What is next?
Fort mode siege mechanics changes, rework and general spice up is the next update. Hatches and doors no longer stop invaders, and constructed walls vulnerable confirmed so far. Ranged combat reworked in the most recent update.
End of Lua beta and merge into the main branch

Ambitions not being retroactive is gay though.

Imagine there was an event where you found the ark of the covenant and it instantly killed you if you were not muslim/Jewish/christian . You got an event chain where you get one of your courtiers to touched it and he instantly died, and this event instantly removed -10,000,000 fervor from all non-abrahamic religions permanently, and whatever religious group discovered it gained 100 fervor.
Maybe even make it so any battle you fought gave you an event to vaporize the entire enemy army but if you or your descendants got a single sinful or crime trait the ark artifact would dissapear and then every single one of your vassals revolted and your neighbors declared war
Or an event chain where biblical judgement day happens and an antichrist spawns on the map with a special government type and peacefully vassalizes everyone then all courtiers under him all converted to his religion and get the mark of the beast, then if you reject you become an unlanded adventurer but are off-map then you get read out the events of apocalypse wich end in the game crashing.
Or maybe even a chain of events where as a gnostic/buddhist ruler if you accumulate over 50,000 piety you go into a coma/regency where you have a chain of events where you either tear a hole through the fabric of reality and instantly convert the entire map to your religion then "die" but all your descendants and friends get 100 stats and 0% stress gain or another where you escape reality and "die" but your character gets literally fucking deleted from the save game so that yor children appear as having no father As Graveyard of Empires finally receives the polish it should have had from day one, how are anons finding it? And with the devs hinting and finally working towards on the Asia-Pacific Front of the Second World War as well as reworking the faction mechanics of the game, what do you hope to see?
Old Thread: >>1970026 Input Focus:

This is fucking amazing
I played jagged alliance 3 and this feels like night and day, not one fight felt this tense or realistic (I know it is not really realistic, but compared to 3 it doesn't feel as "gamey") ITT: strategy games that you and only you have ever played Anyone here still playing? What can we do to drum up more attention? ck3 has the a worst AI of all paradox games, you are literally playing the sims medieval with war How does trade actually work in eu4 under the hood? As far as i can tell they seem to be medieval/fantasy type Rimworlds with real 3d building (castles) and they look pretty cool. But i heard Going Medieval has some insanely retarded ai and dogshit combat and Noble Fates made a shitty artstyle and is more fantastical.
Generally i just like the castle/ hamlet building but without the super militaristic gameplay part of Stronghold. >be me
>heard about how cool and DEEP is this game
>check the AAR (After Action Reports) of veterans
>cool RPG stories (dragons, bloodlines, secret societies, adventures, arms-brotherhood, etc)
>tried out the game with all its DLCs
>it's boring and slow af, I can't do anything, no adventures nor crazy quests/events
>just PTSD from the constant notification pop-ups about some irrelevant thing or stupid character did stupid thing
What people do to get those cool stories?
What secret, obscure mods I need (I check workshop and the mods are meh at best)? Slavery is a debuff or hinderance in every strategy/GSG/econ sim.

Explain yourselves, /vst/. No Dominions thread? Where are my fellow blood magic enjoyers at? Just got this game from Gog for cheap. It's very charming but my God it is mercilessly difficult. Already ran into trouble in the fifth mission where you get the Amber Wizard and need to face a Rat Ogre.
Anyone else tried this game? What's the best mods for it in the year of our lord 2025? I'm looking for mods that make the AI (both campaign and battle) better and unlock all the minor factions, but I don't want anything that fucks with vanilla balance too much. even better than StarCraft or Age of Empires?
I’ve played tons of RTS games over the years — StarCraft II, AoE2 DE, even newer titles like Company of Heroes 3 — but I keep coming back to Zero Hour.
It’s faster than AoE, more explosive than StarCraft, and the generals system adds a unique layer of strategy that I feel is still unmatched.
Yes, it’s a bit janky and outdated in terms of graphics, but no other RTS gives me the same adrenaline rush during late-game battles.
Am I crazy? Or does Zero Hour deserve way more recognition than it gets? What do you think of the new Conquest of Elysium class? >makes the most inadvisable gameplay changes imaginable, becoming derivative to Humankind, a game that flopped

Thread to discuss Graviteam tactics and Combat mission games and others like them. Are there any games with good naval warfare? The last SC2 tournament
ASL group selection soon This got quitely released today.
You ARE going to play it, right?
It's free Which Tropico is best? I've played 3 and 5 only. I want to do a Nazi Breakaway Group run. play it and post screenshots Official Fuck John Relic thread share games and/or analyze shared games So I tried my first space 4x with Galactic Civilizations 3. But I couldn't get into it, even though I love Civ games. I think it's the freedom of movement in space that just makes it less fun. There aren't really any chokepoints or terrain features to take into account like a terrestrial game has. The only game to solve that was Sins of a Solar Empire with its limited hyperspace links between star systems, but it was more RTS than a true 4X. Is there any turn based space 4X that has similar movement to Sins? Or should I just go back to land based games?
Some games look visually very historically accurate. But this strife towarda historical accuracy ends here. KCD gets the looks mostly right, bht had a very unusual protagonist, who could beat up the local lord of the town with no consequences and also get filthy rich from selling broken, looted equipment. Manor Lords gets sold as the most historically accurate city builder ever, but it only gets praised for the visuals. The villagers are all equally good at everything, you assign their workplace and domicile like a Communist state planner. No one owns any property. The only population growth us through immigration, because of the limited timescale, but in games like Banished children can reproduce with their parents and close relatives, because they dont bother modelling courtship, genetics and reproduction properly.
When do developers start creating a proper medieveal town builder with inheritance of property, rights and privileges? I want immigrants to be discriminated against, when it comes to accessing "public" land, which turns out is only public for the founding stock and their direct descendents. They refuse to share that privilege. So is Heart of the Machine actually good?
I really want to start playing Daggerfall but immediately I've ran into the issue of the control configuration being an insurmountable hurdle (I haven't even left the room you start the game in yet).
I'm playing on a laptop and already the command configuration is a non-starter, 'look up' and 'look down' are, respectively controlled by the "insert" and "delete" keys (above the backspace key, pic related). I played around for over 10 minutes and I just know that there is no way I could get to further quests with such a janky setup.
My question is two-fold.. 1) is there a keyboard configuration I could use to make my laptop (pic related) feel somewhat playable for Daggerfall?and 2) I have a USB N64 Controller and I have a USB Gamecube controller.. but I don't think either of those have enough buttons to fully assign every function of Daggerfall to a specific button or whatever - I'm all-in for playing this game so if I have to buy an Xbox controller or w/e. I like Medieval 2 but I find it gets kinda stale without some real competition. If you're good there's almost no reason you ever lose a battle. So I'd like to get a real challenge. Maybe even get some lobbies going. I have a server, too.
I'm mostly looking to play mods. Vanilla has become cringe to me. Not adverse to downloading others like Warcraft: Total War (honestly really fun for multiplayer but they ruined it by injecting NuLore) and I still plan to reinstall TES or WH mods. Right now I have:

It had a kinda cartoony goofy medieval art style and i remeber it had much less units one the field then compared to age of empires 2 or starcraft while still beaing a rts. I saw this game many years ago so i dont remember anything else about and my brother doesnt remeber ever playing it.He played the game about 10+ years ago but i remeber it looking really fun and want to try it out. I NEED a Medieval TW III with a resource system Building a new rig for EU5, always been given the stock response "GPU doesn't matter, go for CPU". Will be getting either a 7800x3d or a 9800x3d, so that's taken care of.
But how shit can you go with GPU? Will an RTX 3050 suffice? How does it cope with Victoria 3? (Haven't played, current PC too shit to run) Don't want to go too cheap and have the game look like dog shit. What do you think of Imperator: Rome with the Invictus mod?
I heard people say it's really good now but I'm not sure. I've been burned by Paradox before How do I get into this game, bros?
Any good guides you'd recommend? how are you doing my lords and ladies How do I deal with the AI Korean civ in AoE2? at Feudal their cheaper skirmishers just lets them outblob me and it just snowballs into them throwing a million War Wagons at me if I manage to survive to Imperial.
I'm trying to beat the Extreme AI with Magyars right now, I tried countering the skirmishers with scout/light cavalry but they just throw their cheaper spearmen at me as well so I can never thin them out and they just out-eco me,
Compared to every other civ I managed to beat in Extreme so far this feels like I'm in the backfoot at every stage and can never get an advantage. why does nobody make RTS games with sandbox campaigns? or even 4X style games with RTS battles?
the most popular RTS in the world for normies is Rimworld, and it's an RTS sandbox game, no? and nobody is trying to make something like it 12 years later? So, I just blew your base to shit with dozens of superheavy tanks. Why? Consult the criteria below:
>it's actually Europe's fault
>you did a Russophobia
>you couldn't face my forces head on so you pounded them with arty like a coward or something
>your triple A kept shooting down my 1700$ helicopters
>Russia is a nation of peace, HOWEVER we must constantly do battle with amerimutts who are always outsmarting us because we're the master race >sat down at 10 pm and decided to play some warband
>look at the clock
>5 am
>still played for 2 more hours
Why is this fucking game like this? what was the point of the party system in HoI3?
every country had 10 different parties yet it was pretty useless in context of the entire game What are the weirdest mods you've seen for strategy games? >the ottomans are hard to beat... Would you replay older titles before getting to the current one, or skip straight to the one you enjoy the most out of a RTS/Turn Based game?
For example I wanna play XCOM 2, but I also feel like I have to play XCOM EU/EW first. It's autism.
What are your thoughts? https://youtu.be/ILU7b29FXFc?si=brCSvL54tzRli1e1
It is made by the Australians who made Age of Darkness: Final Stand
Kinda strange to release an RTS game based on HBO GoT 6 years after the show ended and after the later seasons ruined any cultural significance the show had.

what hope do d&cfags have now? https://forum.paradoxplaza.com/forum/developer-diary/tinto-talks-68-18th-of-june-2025.1788518/
Hello, and welcome to another Tinto Talks, the happy Wednesdays where we talk about Europa Universalis V!
Today, we will discuss the mechanics of Buddhism. In EUV, it is considered another Religious Group, like some that we saw previously, such as Christianity or Islam: Cyber Knights: Flashpoint just got out of the EA.
It's an xcom-like cyberpunk turn-based tactics.
Thoughs? Broken Arrow just released
Talk about the bullshit campaign

Complain about APS New Update just dropped. Now with sleeker text boxes It fucking sucks, actually. This is war! Sublime war! There can be no retreat!

FitgirlRepacks free download: https://fitgirl-repacks.site/call-to-arms-gates-of-hell-ostfront/ it fucking sucks actually Now that the DLC has settled, what's the /vst/erdict? Is this worth it or is it another modern CA DLCslop? I just started up a game of PTO I. I have never played PTO II or beyond and would like to hear your opinions on these games. Growing up my KOEI games were PTO I and Operation Europe. I've been playing several Pacific Theater games lately and nothing seems to scratch the PTO itch I always have. Navy sucks in Hearts of Iron 4. Strategic Command and Warplan Pacific are a bit shallow. Grigsby's War in the Pacific is too big/long for my patience and is a pain to configure on modern PC. PTO always feels just right. I have seen youtubers play PTO II and it doesn't look as good as PTO I. Thoughts on the two by comparison? Man at Arms Don't Suck Anymore edition
Previous: >>2056772 What are some RTS or grand strategy games that feature modern air combat? Anybody playing this game too? It's a lot better than the first game although the 'western indie game' vibe is kinda high I'm playing as the Mamluks, where do I take it from here? Do I stick to Arab roots, and form Arabia? Or do I culture shift to turkish and form Rûm? I do plan on forming Egypt before either and finish the mamlukean mission tree
I have a Turkish ruler atm so I can shift to Turkish culture by event when I become a regular monarchy after forming Egypt From what I can see from interviews
>Jesse was with FG from day 1,
>helped the team climb an absolute gigantic art mountain to get to EA,
>laid a solid albeit somewhat unpopular art foundation (not unpopular with me, I LOVED that early art style!)
>then watched as the art bore the brunt of the EA negative feedback, so then
and imo this is really impressive both professionally and personally...
>took it upon himself to suggest and push for Allen to take over,
>stepped aside with seemingly no ego or preciousness,
>focussed on killing it with lighting tech and other bits while
>letting Allen go nuts on everything the art team has built, killing lots of darlings, and getting the game in a really visually outstanding state.
That imo is freaking impressive. I know of no-one who give up a role willingly like that, because it was that right thing to do for the project.
Shout out to you Jesse, you're smashing this I've played HoI4 to death, but try as I might I can't get into this game. The whole character focused stuff escapes me.
Yes, I did the tutorial fully, but there are so many tiny hidden mechanics and interactions that I never know what the fuck to do.
Any non-trolling tips? I'm a 4x genre virgin, what should I play if I only liked civ 4 and sid Meier's colonization so far and didn't like 5 or 6? Also played freeciv and c-evo and was ambivalent. Civ 1 was cool. I'm interested in economic management and war https://www.ageofempires.com/news/pre-order-age-of-mythology-retold-immortal-pillars/
Age of Mythology Retold: Immortal Pillars will release on the 4th of March. Finally, we'll get to play as China (again). Will you be playing, /vst/?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1vBe-Tcehu4
Also, Retold will come to PS5 for some reason. A-train 9 v5 is releasing on steam in English. THIS IS IT. Why aren't we talking about this? Prior to the 1.0 update there was literal silence for months but it's now back baby. I realized I barely played the first one so I am going to play through that first.
Door Kickers general I guess? Thoughts so far? Discuss. best big kang build before they nurf them for their next dlc? Heroes of magic and sometimes might if you're very unlucky What is wrong with the AI in this game?
>be me
>a ruler with 26 martial
>my liege is the king of italy
>he appoints me as his new marshal
>then fires me to put this fucking retard in my place
>then puts me to work as his spymaster despite having 0 fucking points on the skill
>his personality is listed as rational atheist
>rational
>the kingdom of italy gets dissolved 5 years later

Avaliable for free at https://www.bay12games.com/dwarves/
or as a paid premium version on Steam or Itch.io
>What is the difference?
Both are the same game on the same version (51.xx). The free version uses ASCII as a tileset (but you can mod other usermade tilesets and graphic packs)
With the premium version you pay for a premium tileset + premium OST + access to beta branches and steam integration (if on steam).
>What is next?
Fort mode siege mechanics changes, rework and general spice up is the next update. Hatches and doors no longer stop invaders, and constructed walls vulnerable comfirmed so far
End of Lua beta and merge into the main branch
