Civ 5 had a small amount of classic players annoyed with it, but it very popular in general from the get-go. Probably because Civ was a much smaller series before 5 took off.

Civ 6 had 5 fans annoyed with its artsyle, but was still very popular and well received even with that drama.

Civ 7 has gotten way more hate than any Civ game has gotten ever before.

No it's not, the core mechanics are fucking terrible. The 'eras' system is awful and ruins the feeling of gradual progression Civ was known for, what made it fun. The civ-swapping and leaders being separate from civilization has killed the very heart and soul of the series.
And that's not even going over how Multiplayer is only for one age, the bad roster of civs, the horrible UI, the lack of hot keys, the ugly map, the lack of visual flavor, and all of the game's other issues.

Combine this with it being more expensive than any previous Civ game and you see why Civ 7 is a complete disaster
