They tend to focus on fine tuning the subsystems and adding gimmicks (dating sim is a traditional spice, along with cooking). To their defense this does work commercially, as Nintendo who's the most prolific with this tactic is also ranked 222th of all world companies and the only relatively "pure gaming company" in the first 500 ranks. Sony ranks higher, but they ain't only a gaming company.

Phoenix Point was pretty okay too. Although like Firaxis X-com it needs a better balancing.

I love it (except for the sub-par translation), but I found it more of a pure puzzle in the higher difficulty in terms of gameplay. Not much dynamic enemy AI, but I guess that's just my expectations and tastes.
