but in a nutshell - there's fundamental things that, if completed in a very solid in rigorous manner, leads to unequivocal phenomena that come to appear regularly like clockwork every day and begins to form the basis for the ongoing enlightenment experience
the great stillness is comparatively easy to describe in that all phenomena fall away into the deepest silence ever experienced.
this stillness comes from doing the work and solidly establishing the habit, its why I tell folks to have a few sessions every day.
humans are habitual creatures after all
a major aspect of the habit is cultivating attentive awareness at every moment. there's a reason that one of those buddhist sects considers it a violation of the precepts if a monk loses his attentive awareness for even a single moment. it is a very prescient thing to point out and focus on, its much more important than many realize. all these things like the great stillness or the spark of samahdi, they arise because of focused, attentive awareness; they cease instantly the moment attentive awareness becomes broken by a thoughtform or some other disturbance.
Beth Upton had a good suggestion to "cultivate long chains of ungapped awareness" which is basically the same notion.
the two foundational aspects combine to serve as a platform for the deeper happenings: breathwork and habit
breathwork isnt just paying attention to the breath, it is refining it in a way that reduces/eliminates the neurological potentials raised by the senses.
restrain the senses is a very old recommendation, the neurological potentials generated are why.
they consume energy
every time you take a breath and sniff at the air, the air is sucked into your sinuses and blasted across the olfactory nerves, causing an amplitude signal to be sent to the midbrain.
