This is true but gets tricky when you start studying mDNA and Y chromosomes. Prior to around 10,000 years ago, human sexuality was much more polygamous; i.e., monogamy is as genetically fresh as agriculture (at least that's the theory). If human society is older than that, or if we consider those early civilizations to be part of the "human order," then monogamy becomes a much more recent development. It's equitable and stable, but as we've seen time and time again, such things are not always in humanity's best interests.

It has certainly been demonized in modern society. I wonder how much it has to do with the demonization of the masculine. Think of great men of the past from Abraham and Solomon to Ramses II and Caesar. They has multiple wives and built something with them. The masculine, when cultivated to a certain degree, branches outwards and supports multiple of the feminine. Society is imbalanced this way. For comfort, it seems that a 2:1 or 3:1 ratio is best for women and men respectively, both erotically and socially.
I have yet to see an argument for it that persists beyond the past several hundred, if not thousand, years.
