They don't need to try to stop anything - almost no one, relatively, develops such naturally anyway, and the few who do either don't to reliable degree or need help.
So what they try to do is creating a cheap, reliable alternative (under their control) so no one will have to. No, doesn't mean it's noble - it's still profit oriented, but it's less about denying people anything and more about providing easy way to get similar results when most people won't be able to develop anything.
