Why did people ever think wide one-ways downtown are a good idea? Just making it two-way would slow the traffic down and help the local businesses while encouraging pedestrianism.
In some places it's so obvious I wonder why the one-way still stands. Can we implement congestion pricing in basically any American city?
I used to think you needed a downtown that was segmented from the rest of the city via a waterway (like South Beach Miami or San Francisco or Manhattan), but now I'm thinking you can just employ it on any urban freeway.
Also, is there any reason NOT to use congestion pricing? It seems like the only way to fund urban freeways. It's been tried and tested in several countries around the world. Just got my year-end bonus and want to make a donation. What are some organizations I can donate to, to promote bike lane infrastructure and bike advocacy? What the fuck is wrong with these mongoloid slackers? They completely underschedule longhaul trains everywhere outside the NEC so almost no one can use them for shorter trips and then wonder why ridership is in the shitter. Each route should be minimum 3x a day per direction. which one of you faggots wrote "sneed's feed and seed formerly chucks" in the bathroom of CP 8168 $1,000 for this hunk of shit.
Remember when cycling was exciting? There were new design innovations every year. Now it's all static. Just the same shit over and over at lower levels of value. Surly is an embarrassment these days >splurge on new grips for my bike

Talking bout the blimp train
Last April, a company called Dreamstar Lines announced plans for an overnight service between Los Angeles and San Francisco, in effect, restoring Southern Pacific's Lark service, the overnight equivalent of the more famous Coast Daylight, which ceased service in 1968.
What we know:
>the train would run between Los Angeles Union Station and San Francisco's 4th & King Street Caltrain station
>rolling stock will consist of streamliner cars built in the 1940s and 1950s
>actual train consist would be a locomotive, 5-6 sleeper cars, and a lounge car serving drinks and "tavern food" (idk what that would entail)
>the train would run on a ten-and-a-half hour schedule, departing around 10pm and arrive at its final destination at 8:30am
>Tickets will be in the $300-$1000 (the minimum is slightly higher than the current price for a private room on Los Angeles-Oakland on Amtrak's Coast Starlight at $284)
>there will be no coach service, sleeper class only
>the company hopes to begin operations by Summer, 2024
>the project is far enough along that negotiations with Metrolink and Union Pacific for right of way have already started

What do you /n/iggers think? Is the LARK finally back? Or is this all just a big LARP? I want to strangle every single big buck roadie fred and especially every single downhill-bike-in-a-park pomp who rides around just to do chainsaw sounds with their bicycle's very very expensive hub. A freewheeling bicycle sounds supremely annoying, and also means you are a weak shit who is not pedalling. Fuck you, go ride into a river. What would public transit in LA be like today if it had been? Still the most noble form of transportation is to be carried around by others, walking yourself is for plebs. Show us your palanquins then! How in the fuck are they pulling this shit off? These commies are making us look like clowns! What is the reason for this?! Is there still a fixie subculture anywhere out there, or am I showing my age? Im still enamored with the whole “fixie punk” aesthetic. Considering jumping back on social media is there are still people doing this. But I realize its a niche subculture from the early 2000’s thats been made fun of since day 1.
Since the days of Repack the sport exploded and splintered into various specialist sub genres, but for me this is what cycling has always been about, simple bikes out in the wild, taking on terrain that shouldn't be bike friendly.
Here's a nice film that covers the birth of the sport from the perspective of a photographer who was part of that American story, tons of cool images.
Of course off road cycling has many points of origin, in the UK we have the 'rough Stuff fellowship', which claims to be the oldest off road cycling club in existence and predates the Repackers by several decades, here's a link to a thread that talks about that.
No doubt throughout the history of the bicycle right across the planet, small groups and individuals independently 'invented' mountain biking' by simply taking whatever bikes they had and riding them in the wild. It would be great to learn more about the history of mans off road cycling adventures and perhaps discover where this amazing sport really was birthed.

This thread is for talking about railways, and things related to railways, in the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland - that means we're all about big intercity trains, modest rural trains, long freight trains, trips, tracks, (deep breath) trams, subways, stations, and a partridge in a pear tree~.
If you're unfamiliar with train travel, take a look at National Rail's journey planner, at nationalrail.co.uk/ - tell it where you're travelling from and to, and it'll show you a few options before handing you over to a train company so you can buy a ticket. For the same journey, they'll all charge the same price, so it doesn't matter who you buy one from. The best option for overseas visitors would be to use thetrainline.com/ - it'll support your language and payment card.
Here's a few links:

If steel is so great, why do the finest steel bikes in the world use carbon forks?
It seems to me that steel has an aesthetic value that cannot be substituted by anything else, but as a material for building bikes, its value decreases the more that is demanded of a component. The end of ebike terrorism is in sight. Let's not count our chickens before they hatch, but I'm tentatively feeling hopefully about this. During the time that the last thread was up, hundreds of people were killed by ebike fires. We need to put a stop to this. If it's Boeing I'm going to heaven Happy 20th Birthday 4chan. I traveled to Fremont, CA to meet up with some dear friends and family and found out that the the Niles Canyon Railway was doing a steam excursion to commemorate the Bronco Billy Film Festival where they were showcasing silent-era films that were shot in Bay Area at the turn of the century so I booked a last-minute ride aboard it.

I've been getting into the steelisreal, rim brakes are good enough side of youtube lately, and the clickbait has gotten me thinking about my next bike. How much truth do you think there is to these memes that say that high end steel isn't like the cheap shit I think of when I think of steel? I refuse to consider cantis and if I get disc steel I'm told that's no better than carbon because it's "overbuilt" at that point which "defeats the purpose". So it has to be dual pivot classic road frame made of thin walled fairy tubing, and no I will not elaborate because we all know why.
So it looks like if I'm not too hung up on getting a name brand duende meme bike I can probably pick up what looks like a pretty good steel frame for under $3k. Possibly even less. But then I'd really have to go with some pretty narrow, hard, puncture-prone tires, and I just don't have the energy for that shit. I haven't struggled with inner tubes and frame pumps in pelting ice cold rain by the side of the road in years and I like it that way, latex blood runs through my veins. But TPU was invented, and that's caused me to begin doubting my faith.
Would I be consumed with post-purchase rationalization if I fell for the steel meme? Are steel bikes and rim brakes the cast iron of bikes? Opinionated attention whores who need to have something to argue about at all times so they pick the most argumentative pointless crap that has a grain of truth that gets overemphasized at the expense of the big picture? Or is there something to this memery?

A 17-year-old German teen has been living life as a modern nomad, leaving his parents’ house to live on trains and travel all over his country.
While most 17-year-olds are only just beginning to consider the idea of leaving the nest, Lasse Stolley has already been on his own for over a year and a half. Convinced that his school studies were already behind him, he convinced his parents to allow him to leave their home in Fockbek, Schleswig-Holstein to embark on a unique train-hopping adventure. It took a lot of convincing, but they eventually agreed, and for the last year and a half, the German teen has essentially been living on trains, traveling all over his home country, working as a self-employed coder during the day, and sleeping on night trains at night.
“I’ve been living on the train as a digital nomad for a year and a half now,” Lasse told Business Insider. “At night I sleep on the moving Intercity Express (ICE) train and during the day I sit in a seat, at a table and work as a programmer, surrounded by many other commuters and passengers. I travel from one end of the country to the other. I’m exploring the whole of Germany.”
He gave into his wanderlust in 2022, selling most of his possessions and packing what was left in a 36-liter backpack that he has been carrying with him ever since. Minimalism and resisting the urge to acquire new stuff are an essential part of his lifestyle, as he needs to take everything with him wherever he goes. It’s not always easy, but he has found a way to make it work.

Airlinetards will never get to this level of prestige, only MCAS failures, door plug blowouts, and flight path collisions.
The Railroad once again reigns supreme. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-qisIViAHwI I understand the 747's four-engine design consumes more fuel than modern twin-engine aircraft like the Dreamliner and Boeing 777, leading to higher operating costs for airlines but doesn't Airbus A380's massive body and 4 engines consume even more fuel? 24, second year uni student doing the “best” business degree in my country. Supposedly a golden ticket to the big leagues—consulting, IB, maybe even VC if I licked enough boots. Thought I had it all figured out.
Then today, I’m sitting in my financial accounting class, staring at a balance sheet, and it hits me like a freight train: I don’t give a single fuck about this. I don’t care about IFRS standards. I don’t care about “optimizing shareholder value.” I don’t want to be some Excel wageslave shoveling numbers for some middle manager who clocks out at 5 to drink himself to sleep.
I've always wanted to fly. Not the airline cattle herding bullshit, but real flying—bush planes in Alaska, aerobatics, corporate jets where you get paid six figures to sip champagne at FL450. Problem is, flight school costs more than my net worth (which is fucking zero), and I don’t have daddy’s trust fund to bankroll it. The rational choice is to finish my degree, get a stable job, and maybe try to pivot later. But that sounds like slow death.
It’s like I’ve been lulled into this easy, respectable path, the kind everyone around me nods approvingly at—“smart choice, good future”—but at the cost of ignoring the closest I can get to a real life of adventure.
Do I finish the soul-sucking business grind, or do I say fuck it and go full send on something I actually want to do, even if it means being broke for years? Anyone else been in this position, or am I just terminally retarded? Old thread finally hit its bump limit >>1750878

Have you made any new acquisitions ?

Collectible bike thread!! I was going to school online in Fall but this Spring, I have to take courses in person.
Unfortunately, campus is 5 hours and 30 minutes away walking, and 1 to 2 hours by transit.
Transit here is kinda expensive and can be unreliable.
By car though, it takes 25 minutes to get there from my apartment.
I don't know what to do. I'm too broke to buy a car at the moment. Buying a car implies not just buying the car, but also insuring it because it's mandatory in my state.
Maybe I could consider an alternative vehicle that's faster than walking? Like an electric bike?
The problem is I know nothing about these things.
I see a lot of people in my city with scooters, electric bikes, etc... and there are also e-bike/scooter rental services but honestly these seem like overpriced memes. Touring Edition

>>2028416 It disgusts me how today's so-called "cycling activists" are doing the work of the automotive lobby while thinking that they're the good guys.
Imagine if a bunch of politicians started pushing for a special residential area for a certain group, after having them habitually assaulted with weapons for many years. "We're terribly sorry about all the bloodshed but can't guarantee your safety, if you want to be safe, you have to go in this special place we designated for you".
That is what bike lanes are. We've tried "separate but equal". It doesn't work, because tyranny of the majority means a highly flexible definition of "equal".
People who have been riding bikes for many decades know what the game is. But zoomers and corona cyclists believe they know best. Instead of demanding justice, they demand segregation. Which is exactly what the automotive supremacists want. This is my imaginary island country of Regalia.
What kind of transportation would be feasible on this island? I imagined the country as a British colony settled in the early 18th century and gaining its independence after WWII. The population is around 1.8 million, though the overwhelming majority live in the twin cities of Kingsport and Arkham. The interior of the main island is sparsely populated and mountainous, with a few dormant volcanoes.
I'm trying to imagine the rail lines connecting all the cities on the south coast, and the ferry system between Kingsport and Arkham. Must see Japanese doc showing a day managing Tokyo Metro trains, lot of detail with 100 cameras! Overworked fainting salary men always causing delays!: https://www3.nhk.or.jp/nhkworld/en/shows/5001446/ This stuff is ancient but I hope that it wasn't posted here before:

Both the footage and the tempo if that of the '60s, so do NOT expect some twitch footage and on point editing.
But, I think you all would appreciate it, or - at least - should see this!
ps: use auto-subtitles. While at some point it it definitely an 'eh', it is better than nothing. Today, Bay Area Rapid Transit formally retired the last of its original rolling stock that had been in service since the system opened in 1972. The occasion was marked by speeches from BART officials and a farewell excursion between McArthur and Fremont (where the very first train had run on September 11, 1972). I was there and rode the last train. Spring has started in the warmer climates and the worst snow is behind us.
Did anybody pick up any cool clothes to wear on the bike? A new jersey is 15 bucks on Ali. High fashion stuff like Syn and Pas normal have hipster cred. Vintage 80s throwbacks are in. Everyone has figured out taint pads rule even if sewn into 'tactical' mtb shorts.
It's never been cheaper to look good. What is your bike style and what are you doing in 2025 to make the scene? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WWQ3iLVr-0E
>That cylinder is a mass dampener also known as a J dampener in physics. The purpose is to neutralize high frequency low amplitude oscillations.Mass dampeners are currently used in Moto GP and were banned in F1 in the mid 2000s.The mass dampener can also be placed on the fork, above the bottom bracket and as shown on the rear swing arm/triangle on a full suspension bike.
have these been used on road bikes yet? i have a stiff track bike fixie, anything that could improve performance or comfort would interest me. i haven't paid attention to bike stuff lately so idk if it has been mentioned on GCN/GMBN yet. GCN has done a lot of videos on tire pressure so i could see them experimenting with tuned mass dampers. Why are modern train stations not built with beauty in mind? >be me

Explain yourselves Americans. Road signs. What do you think of them? Which country does them the best? Would you change anything in the Vienna Convention on Road Signs and Signals? Does anyone here like Baldwin/Lima-Hamilton diesels? When you see it

So - what if delta expanded its fleet to include trains?
Let’s say you are going from Augusta, GA to Los Angeles. You could leave AGS at 5:35 and take a 1h4m gate to gate flight to Atlanta, have a 2h16m layover in ATL, then continue on your cross country 5h9m flight to LAX. Add in 2 hours to get to the airport and you have a full day of 10h29m of travel. 5h20m of this time was dedicated solely on getting from Augusta to Atlanta. This is a trip that could take less than one hour on High Speed Rail.
>In Caltrain’s transition from diesel to electric, the transit agency opened a new online store featuring a variety of branded merchandise. In addition to holiday sweaters and exclusive boxed models of the new electric train, a much larger commodity is up for sale: the “Caltrain EMD F40PH-2 Locomotive (Used).”
>“These gently used, lovingly maintained 1985 F40 diesel locomotives could be yours,” the listing states. “The historic locomotives come with 40 years of service, and more than 1,000,000 miles traveled. Perfect for your model train set, train-themed diners, ornamental lawn decor or planter box, unconventional bed n breakfast or just to show up your overly gnomed neighbor’s lawn.”
> When Caltrain completes its electrification project with full service Sept. 21, it will retire most of its diesel fleet. Almost 100 gallery cars will likely be sold to another operator, said Caltrain spokesman Dan Lieberman, and the locomotives are being split up by age.
>Nine newer diesel locomotives will remain in use for the Gilroy service, which isn’t undergoing electrification because Caltrain doesn’t own that portion of the corridor. However, Caltrain has 20 diesel locomotives that have passed their expected retirement dates and will no longer be operational.
>These older trains might be scrapped, Lieberman said, but first, Caltrain wanted to give rail fans the opportunity to bring them home and make something out of them.
>The engine must be disabled and the buyer must cover the costs of storage and transportation, according to the listing. The locomotives will officially go up for auction in October.

Whoever was in control of MH370 took extreme measures to avoid detection after deviating from the scheduled flight plan. Maneuvering the aircraft at the exact moment of ATC handoff, choosing a route that avoided military controlled airspace ,disconnecting SATCOM systems and disabling power control to run off the APU to avoid system rebooting , among other direct inputs shows an incredible knowledge of aircraft communication and aerospace detection methods. I think it's obvious who did this, and it was no doubt planned.
If the pilot's job was to kill a specific target on the flight, it would have been incredibly easy to cause an aerodynamic stall and crash the aircraft into the ocean. He could have even pitched the aircraft into the Indian ocean after leaving radar range, yet WISPR data shows the aircraft flew for over 7 hours until it was ditched in an incredibly remote location.
The question which should be asked is what or who on board the flight to Beijing needed to disappear (and also be completely un-investigatable) why was a regular crash not sufficient to accomplish this goal, and who benefits from an unrecoverable aircraft accident? GPS used to be fancy, and is now affordable
Carbon frames used to be fancy, and are now affordable
Carbon aero wheels used to be fancy, and are now affordable
Hydraulic brakes used to be fancy, and are now affordable
Wireless shifting used to be fancy, and is now affordable
Good tires used to not even exist, and are now available albeit a little expensive
Lighting used to be heavy and annoying, now it clips to anything and you can light up the road with something the size of your thumb
Wide range cassettes used to be unimaginable, now some lazy people are even going 1x because they got filtered by 2x
It seems like it's all been done. Seriously, what's left. What else is there to improve? We even got bonuses like thru-axle, 3d printed saddles, internal routed everything, and aero frames/cockpits, which let's be honest, you weren't really expecting were you?
Can the cycling industry outdo itself or is it now a plateau of stagnation? What tech, policies, city designs, etc, can be used to alleviate traffic congestion in the U.S. of A? I've seen some people suggest that we need to essentially obliterate The current car centered transportation networks we have in favor of stuff involving buses and trains (a ridiculous pipe dream Yes I know but I would also like to know if fixing the traffic issues is actually possible)

Maybe the underlying reason why bike theft is so common is that bike owners on average just have less balls than bike thieves. Is London the most /n/ city in the world? What way can I get into northern ethiopia from London in the cheapest way possible? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jbKmhNoTvW8 Fuck I hate Fedex. Every time I have issues with a package arriving it's always fucking Fedex.
I had a package that was supposed to arrive a week ago and the service paid for weekend delivery, then they just forgot about it. I thought that it was lost in transit because it wasn't updating at a distribution centre for four days. Now finally it goes out for delivery today but the driver didn't make it out to me and supposedly Fedex is bringing it tomorrow (maybe).
This hasn't been my only problem with Fedex. Every time I've had lost packages it's always been Fedex. Or absurd delays it's been Fedex, or delivering the item to the wrong address it's been Fedex.
I'm going to stop buying stuff from places that use Fedex for delivery. What is the intent behind statements like "I'm not a cyclist, I'm just a person who gets around by bike"?
At a surface level it is obviously meant to (proverbially) throw other cyclists under the bus, but to what end? Would it somehow appease the anti-bike people if the person "blocking traffic" didn't agree to be referred to by the word "cyclist"? Do you wear a helmet while riding your bicycle? The future of transportation has arrived.
https://youtu.be/ZVFB2g25OkM They should bring back train crashing as a spectator event. The Queen Mary reopened for hotel guests in May and in June, I had the privilege of spending two nights on board. I'll be uploading my album of the ship over the next few days and discussing the history of the ship that I learned while onboard.
Theoretically speaking, if I was an entrepreneuring billionaire and I wanted to bring back one of the great American passenger trains (Super Chief, California Zephyr, Panama Limited, Empire Builder, City of Los Angeles/San Francisco, 20th Century Limited, Broadway Limited, Powhatan Arrow, Coast Daylight, etc.) to run on a regular basis (let's put it at at least two times a month for a start), which option would be more feasible from an economic/technical/legal perspective?
1. Acquire all of the surviving rolling stock (sleepers, dining cars, dome/observation cars, baggage cars, etc.) from the original consist from private owners, heritage railways, and museums, as well as matching surviving locomotives (can be from ones different railroads since thousands of functionally and aesthetically identical EMD F and E units were sold to all Class I railroads). Renovate them as necessary to make them FRA-compliant, obtain waivers wherever possible. Put them into service as a part-luxury train, part-mobile museum.
2. Commission the construction of a replica consist. Building entirely new streamlined cars from scratch, designed to match the internal and external appearance of its original as much as possible, with changes only being made when it's literally required to make the car FRA-compliant/modern user friendly (updated wiring, HEP, power outlets at seats, WiFi support, replacing wooden paneling with MDF paneling etc.). Motive power consists of custom-built Siemens Chargers designed to resemble the original E and F units (streamlining, bulldog noses, matching paint schemes, etc.) as much as legally possible.
1/2 Has anyone who mountain bikes NOT broken a bone? These faggots should be strictly restricted to class F airspace, with well defined dimension and NEVER EVER LEFT OUT, sick and tired of avoiding them. You move above the streets, on the roofs. The streets would be free of pedestrians for the most part, imagine how many thousands of senseless deaths would be avoided yearly with people ran over by cars, bikes, buses, trains, etc. Cycling has doubled in Paris.
Yes, it's realistic to think American cities can also have large amounts of cycle commuters. We just have to actually build bike lanes. And desu, we have the space.
https://momentummag.com/paris-cycling-numbers-double/ Why are American HSR advocates so obsessed with Chicago?
I am looking for a cheap 50cc moped to buy for about 20 miles of commute and back twice-thrice a week.
At first I wanted to get the Chinese ones on Amazon, but after reading about them apparently not being reliable/lasting long, I decided to get a used moped from a more reputable brand. Since I don't have any experience with mechanics and is quite lacking in funds, buying something that might break easily is not a good idea.
I went on FB marketplace and found some good deals. There is :
>2016 Vespa 50cc for $350
>2020 Genuine Scooter Buddy 50cc for $799
>2007 Genuine Scooter Buddy 50cc for $500
The Vespa is the cheapest but also the most broken(see webm). Parts of it are cracked and the owner admits in the description "broken key but start up good and is in good condition".
The 2020 Buddy is a little expensive in comparison, but almost like new.
The 2007 Buddy is the perfect balance of affordable, from reputable company for reliable scooters, and does not appear cracked at all(the owner even says he had it repaired at a shop before listing).
The problem is that the 2007 Buddy is located 73 miles away from me in a different city. The other ones are at least in the area and I could pick it up by transit.
The hill from both cities is steep, so trying to go in bus and go back on the scooter might not be a good idea. I considered uShip but the lowest estimated quote is around 121 (average 211, highest 272).
What would you recommend? MH17 2: Electric Boogaloo How do you mix training for cycling with a proper strength routine?
I'm trying to raise my FTP, need to lose like 10kg by next year for climbs BUT the Physiotherapist told me I need to do more strength/weight training for my body... Specially my back and shoulders.
I'm currently doing:
>Intervals 3x/wk
>Strength routine (Kettlebell + pullups) 2x/wk
>Long ride on weekends
I've literally never done any strength stuff in my life before and generally hate it compared to cardio. Now that we are a fourth of the way through the 21st century, what has been the best mass transit project of the century so far?
